May the Xmas force be with you
Let the force be with you this Christmas! The iconic Star Wars themed Christmas lights display is back for its seventh year.
Andrew Walters and his family from Warradale have been kicking off the festive season with a sci-fi twist since 2015, with new additions to their Gardiner Ave lights display every year.
The family have been decorating their house for Christmas for 18 years, then added their Star Wars theme to fit in with their love of all things geeky.
“This year is certainly a robot theme that is building on from last year, we did import Grogu, or some people call him Baby Yoda, from The Mandalorian, from the US as an inflatable on the steps of the house,” Mr Walters said.
This year, new lights and a Death Star have been added to the display, which Mr Walters said attracts 100 to 200 people every night.
“On Christmas Eve there’s several hundred, maybe we get up to 600 or more … We’ve been going long enough now that we actually get people coming back and saying “I remember coming here when I was a kid and now I’m bringing my own kids.””
This Christmas’s trip to space first lit up the skies on December 2, of course with the Star Wars theme song, and will end on January 1.
How SA’s best Christmas lights display was almost cut short
Peg and Bill Chartres’ iconic Christmas Lane Lights Display celebrates 40 years of dazzling the neighbourhood this year.
The couple started decorating their home, on Christmas Lane, when they moved to Lobethal in 1983 and began their display with just a single strand of festoon lights.
“It gets to the point where everyone, including family, ask us when we’re going to stop, but we just can’t,” Mrs Chartres said.
They started decorating their house back in September, and Mrs Chartres said they still have to make some finishing touches.
In 2008, due to their ill-health, they decided to put a halt on putting up their display because of the time and commitment it took.
By 2012, however, they just couldn’t resist and after their health improved, back decorating.
“Peg and I both suffer from that shocking disease “Christmaslightous”, a terrible condition that makes you have to continue putting up lights once you start,” Mr Chartres said.
The Chartres’ display coincide with the return of the Lights of Lobethal Festival, the largest Christmas light show in the Southern Hemisphere, running from December 10 to December 31.
The Lobethal Lights were officially cancelled in 2020 because of Covid but still ran unofficially.
