All great love stories have to start somewhere.
For Jodie and Darren Hansen, it began behind the bar at legendary Adelaide nightclub Shenannigans.
Now happily married for 15 years, the Glenalta couple first met when they both worked at the former Westfield Marion hotspot, which was famous for its $1 vodkas and (at times debaucherous!) Ladies’ Night on Thursdays.
“My memories of Shenannigans are definitely just how busy it was. Ladies’ Night and Schoolies on a Saturday were huge nights for the pub and it was always an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ situation,” said Jodie, who started working at the Irish-themed venue as an 18-year-old in 2000. Six months later, her eventual husband Darren had his first shift as a glassy on St Patrick’s Day.
“For us, it wasn’t so much about the stuff that went on when the pub was open… it was more about the awesome parties that took place with the staff after hours at knock-off. That’s probably why there are now so many babies!”
Jodie, who shares two children, Havana, 8, and Alex, 6, with Darren, said she knows at least five married couples who first locked eyes at Shenannigans as part of the club’s staff.
“That pub has a lot to answer for,” she said with a laugh.
“So many wonderful things came from working at Shenannigans – my beautiful hubby, my awesome kids and my amazing friends.”
The couple hosted their engagement party at the venue and later held their 2006 wedding at Mount Lofty House on a Friday - mainly because so many of their guests had to work at Shenannigans on the Saturday night.

Adelaide radio station SAFM, with a little help from Shenannigans’ longtime Thursday night MC, Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello, is bringing back the pub’s iconic Ladies Night for a one-off special event this week.
The station’s breakfast show, including Cosi, Rebecca Morse and Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehmann, will take over the now Verve Bar & Kitchen this Thursday evening and relive the glory days.
“I had some of the greatest times of my life at Shags’ Ladies Night. I even met my
wife Sam there,” Cosi said.
“Those truly were the glory days.”
Reflecting on those years, Darren described it a “great time in his life”.
“Shenannigans to me was about friends and family, I met my wife there and I made great lifelong friends along the way. The reason that Ladies’ Night was so good was because of what the staff made it,” he said.
“It was always about having fun while we were working; dancing behind the bar while making up gallon drums of one-dollar vodkas. Ah, the memories.”
