Lachlan Turner knows it will take time to replace Digby Ioane and read Quade Cooper's intentions

REDS rookie Lachlan Turner has already seen enough of Quade Cooper to be bamboozled by him.

REDS rookie Lachlan Turner has already seen enough of Quade Cooper to be bamboozled by him.

Turner, who will make his Queensland debut in tomorrow's Super Rugby trial against the Chiefs in Toowoomba, has been training with the unpredictable flyhalf since his return from the Wallabies' spring tour but still cannot foresee whether Cooper will kick, pass or run.

To be fair, teammates with years of experience could not have predicted the showman's 35m kick-pass to Digby Ioane from behind his tryline against the Cheetahs in 2011.

Which is why Turner, who was signed last year from the Waratahs, freely admits he cannot yet read Cooper's intentions.

News_Rich_Media: Having scratched his boxing itch, Quade Cooper's already fired up for the Super Rugby season.

"The one thing I'm trying to do is make sure I'm there and expecting anything,'' Turner said.

"When he does throw that pass that splits three blokes and bounces behind some one, I need to be there to catch it.''

Turner was yesterday named on the wing in a side containing nine Wallabies spring tourists for the trial in Toowoomba.

Coach Richard Graham chose Cooper, Saia Fainga'a, James Slipper, Rob Simmons, James Horwill, Liam Gill, Will Genia and Mike Harris in the run-on side and Chris Feauai-Sautia as a reserve.

When it comes to combinations, halves and centres are usually the focus.

Next to his union with Genia, Cooper's most effective partnership was with winger Ioane who left Queensland last year to continue his career with Stade Francais.

Ioane was the playmaker's shadow, hovering off his hip to accept short passes or even act as a decoy to distract defenders.

"You can't replace Digby overnight," Cooper said.

Turner insists he is up to the challenge.

"They're big shoes to fill,'' the winger said. "A roving role's the way I like to play my footy.''

Although there is one more trial to play before Round 1, Graham's first squad for the season answered several questions.

He wants to consider starter Ben Tapuai and reserve Feauai-Sautia as outside centres.

Feauai-Sautia could easily be attached to the end of the backline but Graham wants to use him in the second half against the Chiefs in his preferred centre spot.

Attack is another major focus, and it seems the fullback spot is Aidan Toua's to lose.

The quick-stepping Red possesses a slick passing game and that could provide him with an edge over Turner who also has an eye on fullback.

Another fullback contender, Ben Lucas, has an ankle injury, but he, centre Anthony Faingaa (shoulder) and James Hanson (illness) are expected to have their chance in the second trial against the Rebels at Ballymore next week.
