David Moyes, a good manager and good man, looked a dead man walking: Jamie Redknapp

THERE was a moment on Sunday, when United played at Everton, that I thought: ‘These players aren’t playing for this manager.’

It looked then that David Moyes was running out of time. There was a lack of pace, energy, desire. This was a big game for Moyes, against his old club, but the players weren’t fighting for him. Not all of them anyway.

Moyes tried to defend his players and claimed they had played well in stages. But as Jamie Carragher said on Sky, that isn’t enough when you’re a Manchester United player and you lose 2-0 at Goodison Park.

I also started to get the impression recently some of his staff didn’t want to sit with him. It all added up to Moyes — a good manager and a good man — looking like a dead man walking.

A lot of people have said United don’t sack managers — but they don’t sack managers because they have had Sir Alex Ferguson in charge for 26 years, winning 38 trophies. Now it is: ‘Welcome to the real world and the pain of every other fan.’

Liverpool have been here before. United risk making the same mistakes. The likelihood is they will appoint a foreign coach who will want a foreign backroom staff and lots of foreign signings. The tide has turned and United are swimming in the same waters as the rest.

For Moyes, it would always have been better to be the man who followed the man. But United cannot think a new manager alone will solve their problems.

They don’t need a Band Aid — they need major surgery: five or six new players, an injection of pace, an overhaul of playing staff.

It seems Louis van Gaal is the favourite, but perhaps United should look closer to home. How about Ryan Giggs, with Sir Alex watching over him?

Ryan doesn’t have the management experience, but neither did Kenny Dalglish when he took over at Liverpool and that didn’t stop him winning trophies.
