Weird 40 year old Golden Globes tradition that honours celebrity’s kids

YOU may not see it on the telecast, but for over 40 years the organisers of the Golden Globes have given out a special award, which has been won by some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

TURNS out there’s a random Golden Globes tradition that honours a Hollywood star’s child for, well, being a Hollywood star’s child.

The award, which is titled Mr or Miss Golden Globe and kicked off in 1971, has gone under the radar but is a coveted part of the ceremony and has proved a pillar for certain recipients who have gone on to find global fame.

Most notably Melanie Griffith, best known for Working Girl in which she won a string of awards including a Globe for best actor, picked up the gong as an unknown actor in 1975 as the daughter of industry veterans Tippi Hedren and Peter Griffith.

She later handed over the title of Miss Golden Globe in 2006 to her daughter, Dakota Johnson, who we now know as Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey.

The honour was pioneered by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who decided to profile a daughter or son of one of the industry’s most respected talents to thrust them into the spotlight in their own right.

But while some flew, others flopped.

Kevin Costner’s daughter Lily won the award in 2004 but has only managed a couple of small roles in low-budget films, as well as Jack Nicholson’s daughter, Lorraine, who won it in 2007 but has done little in the industry.

These are the other more well known recipients of the Mr and Miss Golden Globes over the years.

The now 70-year-old American actor was the first person to be honoured as a celebrity’s child, as the daughter of actors John Archer and Marjorie Lord. She went on to become a star in her own right, picking up noms for the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTA awards. She is most well known for her Golden Globe-winning performance in the 1993 film Short Cuts, as well as her role in Fatal Attraction.

At the time of winning the award, she was only known as the daughter of Tippi Hedren and Peter Griffith. She rose to prominence for her role in Body Double (1984), and then again in Something Wild (1986) before she was cast in 1988’s Working Girl, which earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and won her a Golden Globe.

LAURA DERN, 1982

At the start of her career, Laura Dern, daughter of Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, was named Miss Golden Globe. Little did she know, she would go on to win another three Golden Globes for Best Performance by an Actress in Afterburn (1992), Recount (2008) and Enlightened (2011).

The son of Freddie Prinze and Kathy Elaine Prinze was named Mr Golden Globe before his breakthrough performances in blockbuster hits I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997 and She’s All That in 1999 made him a household name. He was very much the heart-throb of the early 2000s.

DAKOTA JOHNSON, 2006

When Dakota Johnson won the award, she had only worked alongside her mother in the 1999 comedy drama Alabama. She then followed in her mother’s footsteps when she became Miss Golden Globe. She appeared in a number of small films after her gong, before being thrust into the spotlight in the blockbuster Fifty Shades of Grey as Anastasia Steele.

The eldest daughter of A-list celebrities Bruce Willis and Demi Moore worked with her parents a number of times before winning Miss Golden Globe. She has since had a number of film credits to her name, and has starred in successful TV series Pretty Little Liars and Empire.

Sylvester Stallone’s three beautiful daughters made history last year as the first joint winners of the award. Sophia, the eldest, is a communications graduate, while her sister Sistine is a model who has graced a number of magazine covers. The youngest, Scarlet, is known as the sporty one and does athletics at school.
