Time On: ‘Dirty, stinking tagger’: Player-turned-podcaster Tommy Sheridan tees off on Kane Cornes

Former Docker-turned-podcaster Tommy Sheridan has taken aim at Kane Cornes, prompting the footy shock jock to label him a “park footballer”.

'Not fit enough': Cornes torches Harley Reid

Time On is your wrap-up of all the footy gossip and banter.

Trading barbs

A new footy feud has exploded in spectacular fashion between, you guessed it, Kane Cornes and footballer-turned-podcaster Tommy Sheridan.

Sheridan took aim at Cornes on his Ausmerican Aces podcast this week, calling him a dirty tagger and playing a highlight clip showing him kicking a goal on Cornes in Round 22, 2013.

“He was a dirty, stinking tagger, and I don’t think anyone would remember him if he wasn’t in the media,’’ Sheridan said with co-hosts, including Dale Thomas.

“I’m sick of him potting Tim Taranto, how do you even rate a player in the top 150 (players in the league) … it’s just stupid. He (Cornes) was slow and he was a dirty tagger and he was just a horrific footballer to watch. And Harley Reid will be five times better than him and I’ve had enough of his f--king comments.”

Cornes said it warranted a response, and he came armed on SEN breakfast on Friday, alongside David King. He brought up Sheridan, who played 83 games for Fremantle and GWS, dropping a mark in a preliminary final, playing the commentary from Bruce McAvaney and Cameron Ling at the time.

“I just thought it was worthy of a response,’’ Cornes said.

“When do you know life after football isn’t going that well for you? Is it when you put the person’s name into Google and the first thing that comes up is dropped mark in a final.

“Prelim final, a dropped mark that you can’t drop. I’m happy to be criticised by the likes of Dane Swan. If Gary Ablett Jr wanted to have a say on my career or Sammy Mitchell wanted to have his thoughts on Simon Black. Probably not going to cop it from an 83-game park footballer whose one career highlight was dropping an absolute soda in a prelim final that cost your team the game.”

Cornes then pointed to Sheridan’s podcast not figuring high in the rankings and that he had appeared on the Armchair Experts which was axed by Channel 7.

“So for the park footballer, life’s not going that well I wouldn’t have thought,’’ Cornes said.

Ox in a bingle

Former Demons great David Schwarz was involved in a car accident while live on radio on Thursday.

Schwarz was giving his tips to SEN WA breakfast hosts Tim Gossage and Scott Cummings when a horn was suddenly heard.

He was backing his old team Melbourne to bounce back from defeat when the drama unfolded.

Schwarz was heard saying, “Mate, I’ve had an idiot just back into me.

“Can you believe that? A bloke he’s just touched me. What a dickhead!

“Anyway, how are we?”

Cummings replied: “Are you serious?”

Gossage then asked, “Have you just got a parking fine as well?”

Schwarz said: “I’ve just got a parking fine. I pulled out and a bloke has just backed into me, what a goose.”

The hosts asked if he needed to stop and exchange details and Schwarz said: “Nah, nah, he’s only just touched me, I’ve got his number plate. I’ll track him down later on.

“How’s that? I’ve had a great start to the morning. How are you, boys?”

Cummings was impressed that Schwarz would handle the situation personally.

Richmond Gorringe at it again

After changing his name to Richmond Gorringe when the Tigers upset Carlton, social media star Daniel Gorringe is at it again.

Gorringe has declared the Blues are certainties to beat the Western Bulldogs on Friday night. If not, he’s changing colours.

“If Dogs win I’ll dye my hair like Rory Lobb — blue,’’ Gorringe said.

“They’re not winning, they can’t win. Like enough has to be enough for this football club (Carlton).”

Caro cares?

Mason Fletcher, the college football punter son of Essendon legend Dustin Fletcher, has taken a swipe at Channel 7’s Caroline Wilson with reference to the Bombers drugs saga.

Fletcher posted to X after Monday night’s episode of The Agenda Setters during which Wilson questioned the media’s treatment of Eagles young gun Harley Reid.

Dustin Fletcher was named after his retirement as one of 34 past and present Essendon players found guilty over their use of illegal supplements during the 2012 AFL season and served an ASADA ban.

Mason is a promising punter for the University of Cincinnati, was joined last year at the University of Cincinnati by younger brother Max, who had previously punted with Arkansas.

Reid channels Cuz

It appears Harley Reid still has a sense of humour despite the critics lining up.

The Eagles no. 1 draft pick flipped the bird to the Brisbane crowd at the weekend and was cleared by the MRO of any wrongdoing, although the club was issued with a please explain.

On Monday he briefly changed his profile image on Instagram to one of Ben Cousins who famously put up his middle finger up to a camera before a match in 2009.

When it was put to him on Fox Footy’s AFL 360 that West Coast had been asked for a please explain, co-host Garry Lyon said: “I can explain it: Don’t be a dickhead, Harley.”

Asked by co-host Gerard Whateley if it was time for an intervention, Lyon said: “If West Coast don’t, there’s about 14 other teams that will.

“We spoke about it last week. He got more criticism and he brought it on himself. As I said last week and pre-empted this, he’s a 19-year-old. He’ll make a fool of himself and embarrass himself. Giving seven free kicks way, no good.

“But he’s 19, learned a lesson and learn it the hard way, Harley — you’re making it hard for yourself. But he’ll get there.”

Cornes doubles down on Tim

Media colleagues Kane Cornes and Matthew Richardson have renewed hostilities on social media over Richmond midfielder Tim Taranto.

Last year Richardson expressed his displeasure on X, formerly Twitter, when Cornes sent up Trent Cotchin in a segment on the Sunday Footy Show.

Fast forward 12 months and they are working on the same team at Channel 7, but Richardson didn’t hold back on Cornes’ Taranto hot take.

Cornes, who famously said two years ago that Taranto wouldn’t be in the top 150 players in the competition, doubled down on that opinion during Richmond’s loss to Port Adelaide. Richo was critical of that comment at the time too.

“Taranto 4 HB’s, -27 meters gained at halftime. Top 150? #AFLPowerTigers.” Cornes posted.

Richardson was quick to reply: “Did you play well every week. No is the answer. Ordinary post.” Richardson wrote.

Cornes said before he started working at Seven that the two people he had some tension with were Richo and Dale Thomas.

While Thomas and Cornes have seemingly made peace, there’s clearly still some awkwardness with Richardson.

“If we do (work together) that tension will be good,’’ Cornes said.

“There’ll be some natural tension there which I think is not a bad thing. Not everyone has to get along personally as long as you put the program first, which I think both of us will do.”

WAGs weigh in on umpiring

The players had to bite their tongue about the umpiring on Friday night but two Bulldogs WAGs had their say.

Neila Brenning, fiance of captain Marcus Bontempelli, re-posted an Instagram story by James Harmes’ wife Corey, showing the free kick count 14-33 with the comment: “Umpires … 3 points”. The picture of the pre-game fireworks paying tribute to the club’s 100 year anniversary, was accompanied by angry emojis.

One player, Ed Richards, did make some comments that he’d like to see the umpires put their whistle away after the side’s six point loss.

Sons of guns

St Kilda defender Callum Wilkie gave it to club great Leigh Montagna for revelling in the Saints’ win over Geelong.

Montagna, who had his children at the game along with those of former teammates Nick Riewoldt and Lenny Hayes, could be seen in the rooms basking in the glory post-game.

Wilkie, who got a kiss on the head from coach Ross Lyon, said he had receipts.

“Before we start, I’ve got a bone to pick with one of you lads. Not only Joey did you during the week say when you were going to bring Noah to the game last week that you were going have to leave at halftime because Geelong were going to flog us … you had the audacity after the game to be down in the rooms slapping up with everyone thinking you had anything to do with the win,’’ Wilkie said on Triple M’s Sunday Rub.

Montagna backtracked and said it was just theatre for radio.

“I take a lot of credit Cal … not only did my clip fire you boys up and the presence of me there … it was a good performance. It’s just banter, deep down I knew we’d win.”

Clubs chasing fame

Collingwood and Gold Coast have recruited some famous faces early in the season.

Magpies captain Darcy Moore had surfer Owen Wright and singer Kita Alexander and their two children at the match in the rooms on Friday night, while the Suns have managed to lure visiting Hollywood actor Leslie Mann.

“What a night,’’ Wright posted.

“Safe to say we have some little @darcymoore / @afl fans. I love seeing Vali’s soul come alive with excitement watching that game.”

The Suns said Mann had been welcomed to the Suns family. She’s been in Australia filming a movie with Aussie Isla Fisher.
