The ARIAs 2014: Red carpet hits and misses and the one outfit that hurt our eyes
DON’T look down. There are some things that simply cannot be unseen — and this Triple J radio host’s ARIAs outfit is exactly that.
THE 2014 ARIA Awards kicked off with a slew of young, hot talent walking the red carpet at The Star in Sydney.
And as far as the fashion was concerned, this year it was all about the midriff — that, and Triple J host Matt Okine’s TMI (as in way, way, way too much information) outfit.
For reasons unknown, Okine rocked up as the child dancer from Sia’s Chandelier video — featuring the most unsightly bulge this side of Baywatch.
Okine was accompanied by co-host Alex dressed as Chet Faker, but really, when you have a grown man in a flesh-coloured leotard, you’re only looking at one thing.
The pair’s publicist told news.com.au that the outfit was a last minute decision by Okine, which had their rep rushing out to the shops on Wednesday in search of the hilarious getup.
As for Alex Dyson’s ginger beard and beanie combo, paying homage to multiple award winner Chet Faker, we’re not too sure Chet was overly impressed with the impersonation when he accepted an award from the boys.
“There’s a dude in spandex here, I can see his junk,” he said on stage.
In other news, Katy Perry decided to walk the red carpet even after her run-in with Aussie media this week, One Direction and Aussie boys 5SOS left the crowd screaming so hard they cried, while Delta Goodrem made a reappearance after what seemed like months off the Aussie scene.
Perry led the charge of midriffs down the red carpet wearing Western Australian designer Jamie Lee Major.
The one-off crystal encrusted two piece was hand embellished with beading and took Major approximately 400 hours to create at a retail price of $6600.
Kate Peck looked festive in a pompom number designed by up-and-coming Australian label Dyspnea, while Kyle Sandilands’ publicity-loving girlfriend Imogen Anthony forgot Halloween was last month, rocking up with spiders in her hair.
The Veronicas looked rail-thin but very glam-goth in their floor length lace J’Aton frocks. They seemed relieved to be talking to the press about new music after seven years in record company limbo. What were they up to in the interim? “Meditation,” said a very Zen Jess.
Also surprisingly shy: Jess Mauboy, perhaps because she was stepping out for the first time with famously publicity-wary long term boyfriend Themeli.
However, the winning outfit of the night went to Matt Okine from Triple J who rocked up as the child dancer from Sia’s Chandelier music video — revealing a not-so-subtle glimpse of his own Chandelier.
Canberra duo Peking Duk stole the best transport award, arriving in an ice cream truck blaring their hit song High from the speakers.
There was also no Iggy Azalea, but visiting Brit popstar Charli XCX was the ambassador for Iggy’s hit Fancy, seeing as she sings the hook. She told us she wouldn’t be storming the stage to accept any awards on Iggy’s behalf. She looked fab in an ultra-garish beaded frock, the sort only a pop star could pull off.
Speaking of MIA, Sia was another big no show of the night.
