JEREMY Clarkson will reportedly be told within the next 24 hours whether his BBC career is over.

The Top Gear presenter’s future is expected to be announced today, with BBC director-general Lord Hall indicating that he is ready to announce his decision, The Telegraph is reporting.

The 54-year-old host was suspended by the BBC this month for allegedly punching producer Oisin Tymon during a row which took place after filming, and was again in hot water over the weekend for calling his bosses “f***ing bastards” in an expletive-laden rant at a charity event.

If a report on the “fracas” concludes that Clarkson did punch his colleague Oisin Tymon in a row over catering arrangements, it is thought Lord Hall will have little choice but to sack BBC’s highest-paid presenter.

The Telegraph reports, despite being axed, Clarkson will be thanked for his work on the hugely popular motoring show, but will be told such behaviour won’t be tolerated.

A petition to have Clarkson, who has a seven-figure contract with the BBC, reinstated on Top Gear has gathered almost one million signatures and was delivered to BBC headquarters in London on Friday.

Insiders have indicated that a series of Top Gear Live events will go ahead this year with Richard Hammond and James May even if Clarkson is sacked by the BBC.

According to well placed sources, senior BBC executives are hoping that Radio 2 Breakfast Show host Chris Evans will agree to take over.

Evans, 48, has appeared on Top Gear a number of times but had previously ruled himself out of the running. He boasts one of the most prestigious car collections in Britain.

Clarkson was linked on Monday to a possible new TV show about farming.
