Sandra Sully has been rocking a new look on TV recently – and it’s a look viewers had never seen on the veteran star before.

In the past few weeks on the 10 News First bulletin, the beloved newsreader has ditched her trademark clean-cut style for something edgier.

Gone are the buns or bouffants with the new Sully now letting her blonde hair down to show off blunt ends. Her fringe, which is usually styled or teased to the side, has also been worn down and in full lately.

It wasn’t just her hair that got the makeover treatment. Sully also appears to have sidelined her conservative look for something more modern.

On Tuesday night’s bulletin, the Ten talent reached for a collarless blazer teamed with a low-cut, black V-neck top.

Sully has always been an advocate for her colleagues dressing how they want while in the hot seat. Last year, she hit out at the strong focus on her and her female colleagues’ appearances on-camera.

In particular, Sully called out a comment she overheard from a former male colleague about another newsreader’s breasts being too large for TV.

She brought this incident up while making a speech at women’s media event, only for the male colleague to express his disgust afterwards.

“It got back to the office and that (former male colleague) said to me, ‘That was a bit pointed, wasn’t it?’” she shared with the ABC when discussing female journalists being judged differently to men.

“And I went, ‘You shouldn’t have said it, should you? What’s that got to do with anything? You’ve got to stop this, it’s not how you behave anymore.’”

Sully typically wears her hair up and away from her face.

She also shared her own experience as a former reporter on the road who was told by a senior producer she had to wear lipstick because “it was important”.

“I remember I just laughed. I went, ‘What? You can’t be serious.’ I don’t even know if I verbalised it. I think I just thought it and moved on,” Sully recalled.

“I became increasingly aware of the double standards that women were being judged: What you wear, how you presented, what your hair looked like, your make-up.

“We were judged far more harshly than men and so that was an extra kind of obstacle to overcome.”
