Raw pork disaster sees Brendan Langfield out of MasterChef

IN a monumental cooking disaster, a MasterChef Australia contestant served up a pork dish so raw that every judge refused to even taste it.

IT was a monumental cooking disaster never seen before on national television.

Brendan Langfield became the first top 24 contestant eliminated from this year’s MasterChef Australia series after he plated up a pork dish so raw that none of the judges were prepared to taste it.

The incident happened when Brendan, one of five Queenslanders still competing in MasterChef Australia, was placed in the bottom three.

In a cook off against Deepali Behar and Rachael Ciesiolka, Brendan chose to cook Chinese marinated pork loin with deep fried lotus root and pickled shiitake mushrooms.

The pork was so undercooked that none of the judges — Kylie Kwong, Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan — took the risk of tasting it.

Brendan came unstuck early on a night which centred on Chinese-inspired challenges set by Kwong.

The first round of tonight’s elimination challenge called on contestants to make fried rice in 30 minutes.

That was a problem for Brendan whose previous dishes in the competition included creole prawns with maple bacon poutine and hand-rolled macaroni and cheese.

He was criticised for having far too much chilli and not enough Chinese flavour in his fried rice.

Brendan dropped to the bottom nine and went into round two — a ‘name that ingredient’ challenge where contestants took turns to name 50 Chinese ingredients.

Brendan correctly named snake beans but stumbled on Char Sui sauce which he called Hoison sauce and went into the bottom three cook off.

Brendan told News Corp Australia that the indignity of serving raw pork would not get in the way of his food dream.

The 26-year-old has already set up his own mobile restaurant, Riverland Market, serving American style food at markets across Brisbane.

“From MasterChef the main thing I’m going to take away is that I know I love cooking, and I know I love food, and I know it’s something I want to do for a long time,” he said after his exit. “So, going home, I’m going to make sure that’s what I focus on.”

Brendan, a bass player for band Finabah, has also worked as an AFL development manager, a fitness consultant and in a variety of retail jobs.

He said he is passionate about high end, pan-American style cuisine and had dreamt of running the best American style food truck or restaurant in Australia.

“I love gluttony with an air of finesse,” Brendan said.

In the bottom three cook off, Rachael served a Szechuan pepper and Coriander Crab with Chinese broccoli dish that was so good that Kwong wants to add it to the menu of her Billy Kwong restaurant in Sydney.
