MKR elimination: it's an all-girl finale after surfer dads Blair and Paul get boot from My Kitchen Rules

THE My Kitchen Rules finale is set to be an all-girl showdown after the surfer dads Blair and Paul got the boot.

Chloe and Kelly fall short again on MKR

The My Kitchen Rules finale is set be a ratings bonanza for Seven after Chloe and Kelly - the villains viewers can’t get enough of – became the first team put through, creating an all-female grand finale.

They narrowly beat surfer dads Paul and Blair in the first semi-final setting the stage for an all-female finale.

The ratings are will no doubt climb even higher if Victorian twins Helena and Vikki emerge victorious from Monday’s second semi-final to take on their apparent nemeses in a head to head grudge match on Tuesday.

Ousted Gold Coast contestant Paul Bullpitt, 45, said that while Chloe and Kelly had been the better cooks on the night, he was also disappointed at their two-faced behaviour.

“I don’t know if we ever got a true insight into who they were because when we look at some of the things they said in the interviews, they made some pretty ordinary comments … I really don’t understand their motivation” he said. “They’re probably not our kind of people.”

By contrast, he and Blair were most proud of maintaining their integrity the whole way through.

“We’re two middle-aged men and the last thing we’re going to engage in is all that bloody squabbling and backstabbing and God only knows what else,” Paul said. “Who we are on TV is who we are in real life. We didn’t want to put on an act.”

Speaking of acts, teammate Blair Tonkin, 38, said he didn’t believe news reports the rivalry between Chloe and Kelly and the twins has been staged for the cameras.

“There’s definitely some animosity there,” he said.

Chloe and Kelly began the semi-final brimming with confidence and even cracking open a bottle of champagne, but the wheels soon fell off and they only just finished cooking and plating up their lobster and smoked salmon entre, and Pesce all’ Acqua Pazza (fish with crazy water) main, with seconds to spare.

But the girls admitted Paul and Blair were a team they were hoping not to have to go up against.

“Paul and Blair are strong, consistent and great guys so we had to bring everything we could.

Paul and Blair were the team we didn’t want to go up against and they didn’t want to come up against us. While we’ve been inconsistent we can produce really good food. In the end, we were able to get across the line,” Chloe said.

While the surfer dads remained cool and collected throughout, they were the ones called out for undercooking their pink snapper entre. And the decision by these two latter day dessert queens to include chocolate ganache with their kangaroo fillet main was deemed highly suspect by several on the judging panel.

“Are you saying we should have left the desserts for dessert time?” laughed Blair. “No you can’t go into a semi-final without a bit of risk.”

When the scores were tallied up, the girls had won by a single point, 47 to 46. Paul said the fact Liz Egan had awarded them the only 9 of the evening proved just how subjective the judgements were.

“We were trying to step up and do something a little different and the thing we’ve learnt is that food is very polarising,” he said. “Some of them loved stuff and others didn’t… you can’t please everybody.”

The pair admit they never really had an answer when the producers asked them about their ‘food dream’ – “We don’t really have one and I’m not sure that’s what they wanted to hear” said Paul - but the two Gold Coast teachers said they’d be interested in helping educate men and their families on sustainable, healthy eating – “not flash in the pan” diets.

And they refused to tip a winner, saying it was anybody’s game.

“Realistically, out of the top six or seven teams it could have been any two teams that got down to the final, it was that close ” Blair said. “It just comes down to the day and if you have luck on your side.”
