“Tim will still eat you.”
There’s nothing quite like a reference to oral sex during a wedding speech that exposes the sexist culture flourishing in Australia.
Last night, Married At First Sight returned with a bang, and by that, I mean people who barely have any business sharing a KitKat got married to each other.
It was all the usual stuff: the women were hopeful, the men looked sweaty, and there were some exaggerated lips and gasps.
There was also a best man speech that was a horrifying insight into what adult Aussie men still think is funny in 2024.
We all had the pleasure of watching Tim and Sara tie the knot on Monday night. Do they have anything in common? Nope.
The main thing they managed to bond over was their love of weighing food before eating it. Which might be the saddest thing anyone has ever heard.
Anyway, to celebrate the antics, Tim’s best man Ben stood up to make a speech. He wanted to put on a bit of razzle and dazzle for the cameras, so he brushed his mullet and decided to make awkward sex jokes.
He made some bizarre reference to Tim getting oral sex while driving and ending up in an emergency room. When that was met with horrified responses, he surged ahead with a festival story and a metaphor that no one asked for.
“Tim had the idea to pack his own lunch at a four-day music festival in the middle of an Australian summer. On the last day, we sat in awe as he devoured rancid four-day-old chicken,” he said.
He was also reading off a piece of paper, so this little speech was something he’d been working on and wasn’t courtesy of a few too many beers
Ben then decided to get a bit deep and described Tim as a “wonderful” human being, but just when you think maybe things were turning around and he had decided to stop with the sexual innuendo, things got worse.
“He radiates charisma like the sun. And, Sara, you can find solace in the fact that, rancid or not, Tim will still eat you,” he declared.
Ben’s speech wasn’t funny but it would have made anyone’s chicken dinner suddenly seem disgusting.
It’s hard to know if the best man’s joke was designed to embarrass Tim or Sara, but it is less about the intention and far more about the result.
Ultimately, Sara was stuck looking uncomfortable while the idea of someone performing oral sex on her was joked about on television. Even if it wasn’t meant to be humiliating, it just is.
The reality is that women are still shamed for sex acts, and men are still applauded for them. We don’t have a male word for slut because men get high-fived for multiple sexual partners, and while the times are changing, the word slut is still used to insult women. So, as long as it is in our vocabulary, things really aren’t changing that fast.
When Ben told the joke about the oral sex that Tim had allegedly received in a car, it was positioned as a cool thing, something to maybe even brag about, but when he told the oral sex joke about a woman receiving it, well, then it was associated with off chicken.
So, while the joke might have been more at Tim’s expense, the idea of comparing a woman’s vagina to four-day-old poultry is just offensive and shaming.
Sure, the best man’s speech can be laughed off as just someone not being able to read the room and going for cheap sex jokes that don’t land. But, it also exposes that in 2024, men still think that performing oral sex on women is gross and something they want people to laugh at.
It is easy to dismiss Married At First Sight as salacious reality television. However, ultimately, it reflects modern Aussie culture and showcases what men are still joking about and what women are sick of hearing and done laughing at.
