COMEDIAN Lawrence Mooney has launched an extraordinary tirade against a journalist after an unfavourable review for his show in the Adelaide Fringe.
In a foul-mouthed rant that went on for several hours on Twitter last night, Mooney attacked The Advertiser’s Isabella Fowler, calling her a “deads**t”, “amateur,” and an “idiot” and accusing her of having “a tiny mind” after she reviewed his stand-up show, Moonman, at the Rhino Room.
In her three-star review, Fowler said she left the show, wondering whether Mooney was a comedian or “just a funny guy under a spotlight”.
Mooney, who has worked in radio and television for several years, including appearing on the ABC series The Agony of Life and hosting the ABC panel game show Dirty Laundy Live, was not impressed.
“Are you deaf or an idiot?” he spat in tweets after seeing Fowler’s review.
“You did hear people laughing hard for an hour didn’t you,” before suggesting the journalist go back to her usual round, real estate.
Fowler defended her review, telling Mooney, “hope attacking me on twitter makes you feel like a big man. Soz (sorry) I didn’t like your show.”
“Don’t play victim deadshit, you wrote the piece of crap so I’m going to hang it around your neck”.
Mooney mustered some support. Twitter user David Swan inquired: “Did you just call one of Australia’s best comedians not an actual comedian?”
Comedian and broadcaster Kate Langbroek also came to Mooney’s defence, describing him as “one of the funniest people ever”.
But Fowler also attracted support from users who said they were appalled by Mooney’s reaction and were glad they didn’t buy tickets to his performance.
Mooney later told BuzzFeed: “What made me angry was her contention that I’m not a comedian just a funny guy under a spotlight.
“I’ve had much more brutal reviews. The quaint difference between a comedian and a funny guy. I’ll leave it there.”
He will perform his Fringe show until February 27.
