Harriet Dyer shares ‘nipple regret’ on Colin From Accounts as she and Patrick Brammall debut Season 2

It’s a scene-stealing moment on the hit Aussie comedy Colin From Accounts, but its star Harriet Dyer has expressed her regret at freeing the nipple.

It’s not every day that a pilot for a television series goes on to become a massive hit and win a swag of awards.

Throw in the fact that Colin From Accounts’ pilot episode was written in four days flat and it makes it even more special. Not bad for a show that opens with a nipple flash. More on that later...

The Australian comedy series is co-created by real-life husband and wife team Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer, who seven years ago wrote the pilot episode herself in less than one week. It would have been sooner had she not been a Sims fanatic.

“I actually wrote it in four days because I spent the first day trying to download [screenwriting software] Final Draft,” she tells news.com.au while promoting Season 2 of Colin From Accounts, which is now streaming on BINGE.

“Took a while, I had to clear space. I had to delete the Sims, too.”

Brammall applauded his wife’s efforts, chiming in: “Look how prolific you’ve been since you got rid of the Sims.”

Brammall then went on to write Episode 2 and after more writing back and forth between the pair, here they are – one AACTA, three Logies and two Gotham TV Awards later.

And with the show now airing in more than 100 countries including in the UK on the BBC and US on Paramount+, there’s talk an Emmy Award is on the cards.

“I dunno about all that, but it’s always nice to get awards, nominations, that sort of stuff,” Brammall says. “But genuinely, it’s the way that people respond to us when they see us. That’s honestly the thing that always blows us away.”

Season 2 just premiered on BINGE and Brammall and Dyer cannot believe they have come this far.

“It takes a lot effort to make it look effortless, but even still, it surpassed our expectations at first season the way people loved it, so we’re very happy,” he says of the series, which revolves around medical student Ashley who flashes her nipple at stranger and brewery owner Gordon while he’s driving, and as a result he hits a stray dog.

Through a series of hilarious events, Ash and Gordon are now left caring for the special needs dog, who they affectionately name Colin From Accounts.

The show is raw and refreshingly real, with Dyer saying she was inspired by the comedy-drama series Girls because it showed life in all its nitty-gritty glory.

“The first time I saw the pilot of Girls and [creator and star] Lena Dunham was having a sex scene and it was just so real. I felt so inspired and I thought, ‘Why don’t we see this more? Why don’t we see women being messy and not TV-messy?’” she recalls.

“It’s very hard to keep a realness going once you’ve been in hair and makeup, once you’ve been lit, you’ve been edited. It is hard to maintain a grittiness and we try, but it still has to look pretty TV, I guess. Ish. But there’s real behaviour. We like to keep it real and we do like to make it a story about embracing chaos.”

Speaking of real, the pair often base some of the storylines on their real-life experiences.

“All the medical stories are pretty much from my friend Steph, the doctor,” Dyer shares. “I had to give her a thank you in the credits this season. She also would go on Facebook chats and ask all her medical mates any funny stories for Colin.”

And while they don’t regret putting some real-life experiences into the show, Dyer does have second thoughts about that very first scene featuring her nipples.

“I sometimes have nipple regret,” she tells us. “I mean, they’re not great big boobs that are causing anyone a big offence. Come on. They’re mine and they’re out there, and I know they’re probably on a lot of weird websites in countries that I’ve never even seen.

“The other day we were doing an interview and they played that bit and I was like, oh my God. I just wasn’t expecting to see my own boob today.”

Colin From Accounts is now streaming on BINGE, available on Hubbl, and on Showcase and On Demand.
