Aussie-born pop star revealed on The Masked Singer

WARNING: Masked Singer spoilers below.

This season’s Masked Singer reveals continued during Sunday night’s episode, with the Popcorn revealed to be Australian singer Sam Sparro.

Sydney-born, US-based Sparro, 39, shot to fame back in 2008 with the electro-soul anthem Black & Gold, which was a top-five hit both here and in the UK.

Before his identity was revealed, Popcorn performed a stunning version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, accompanied by another clues package that had all signs pointing to Sparro. There were references to Elton John (who bought a portrait of Sparro in 2012) and Star Trek (Sparro’s father composed music for the classic show). There was mention of Voodoo – a song he wrote for Adam Lambert – and making a Return to Paradise (the name of his second album).

And he was finally picked by at least one of the judges, with Mel B correctly guessing Sparro.

Elsewhere in Sunday’s episode, Mirrorball performed the Dua Lipa hit Levitating – and judge Mel B got the closest to who fans have been tipping Mirrorball to be since before the season, former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton, by guessing her old PCD bandmate Nicole Scherzinger.

The Blowfly sang a Kid Laroi song – still sounding just as much like Shannon Noll as he did in episode one – and the Snapdragon (who I’m still sure is Sheldon Riley) soared through the London Grammar hit Strong.

Then it was time for the wildcard contestant Microphone, who I’d pinned as Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams after her debut on the show last week. A few notes into this week’s performance, and I’m more sure than ever (plus there were several Destiny’s Child references in her clues package).

Then there was the Rooster, who had me stumped in early episodes but is definitely firming up as Hugh Sheridan now. Particularly after that clue package: There were references to Liza Minnelli – Sheridan once served as her support act; and Nepal – Hugh famously rushed to Nepal to find brother in the wake of a 2015 earthquake.

Meanwhile, Masked Singer judge Abbie Chatfield let slip an interesting behind-the-scenes titbit during an appearance on Ten’s comedy show The Cheap Seats last week.

The star confessed that her height-based guesses during the show had been a little too sensible, and producers had warned her she was “ruining the fantasy” of the some of her follow judges' more outlandish picks.

“I was told I was height-obsessed and to stop obsessing over heights, because it was ruining the fantasy and that it could be someone else,” she told the hosts.

“But I was like, I know how tall Osher [Günsberg] is, and I’m going to work back from there – and I was usually right.”

Perhaps, but it’s been fellow judge Chrissie Swan who’s been on a Masked Singer winning streak recently, with the fellow newbie to the judging panel correctly guessing the last three contestants to be revealed: Jamie Durie, Emma Watkins and Matt Preston.

We also had guesses of our own at who each contestant was earlier in the season – see how we’re stacking up as each celeb is revealed.

Popcorn’s unmasking leaves five contestants still in the game this season, including the newly-introduced ‘wildcard’ player Microphone – who is widely tipped to be Destiny’s Child superstar Michelle Williams.

The Masked Singer continues 7:30pm Monday on Ten.
