The Claremont Murders
Monday, 8.30pm, Seven
It’s the final part in this sensitively told, dramatised version of the investigation into the disappearance of three young women in Claremont. Catherine Van-Davies is Seven journalist Alison Fan, who followed the case from the day Sarah Spiers went missing, all the way through to the end of the trial when “knockabout suburban tradie, loving husband and stepfather” Bradley Robert Edwards (Ryan Johnson) is charged and found guilty in the longest and most expensive trial in WA history. Van-Davies says there’s always added pressure when you’re taking on the name of someone who exists in the world. “So, yes, she’s this award-winning journalist, but she’s also a mother and a resident of Claremont,” she says. “She also is in some ways representative of the community that is dealing with this. I think her absolute determination to get justice and to the truth of this is reflective of the broader community’s determination to find a resolution. I don’t underestimate my responsibility in portraying that.”
Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe
Streaming, ABC iview
Having gone global with their 2020 Netflix sketch series Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, the Melbourne comedy trio return home with this six-part series. It’s kind of a sitcom, obviously set in the titular cafe, operated by the chaotic trio of Broden Kelly, Zachary Ruane and Mark Samual Bonanno.
Selling Houses Australia
Wednesday, 8.30, Foxtel
There’s been a few challenges for the Selling trio this season, but this home in Sunshine West, about 13km from Melbourne’s CBD, really takes the cake. Owner Lynda bought it as an investment property, then ploughed $100,000 into renos but the builder quit halfway through – leaving holes in the ceiling and floors. As Wendy Moore says: “It’s a diamond in the rough – it’s just really, really, really, really rough.” Can the team still work their usual magic?
Til Death Do Us Part Kourtney & Travis
Thursday, Disney+
I’m slightly mortified to admit it, but I regularly hate-watch The Kardashians. So, yes, I will tune in to dissect the wedding of last year. Or should that be weddings. It seemed every other week Kourts and Travis married in a different location – Vegas, Santa Barbara, and then a Dolce and Gabbana fest in Italy. “This is our personal archive footage that we are sharing with the world,” Kourtney says. OK, I can’t wait.
The Last Thing He Told Me
Friday, AppleTV+
Loved the book, and it was sweet relief to also love this limited-series adaptation (by the brains behind Spotlight) of US author Laura Dave’s best-selling novel. Jennifer Garner is Hannah, whose life implodes when her husband Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) suddenly disappears, leaving behind a bag of cash and FBI agents in hot pursuit. Her only ally in her search for the real Owen is her sullen teenage stepdaughter, Bailey (Australia’s Angourie Rice).
Blindspotting
Friday, Stan
It’s been two long years waiting for this second season of the heartwarming comedy-drama. It picks up nine months after Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones) married Miles (Rafael Casal). Ashley’s trying to navigate her new normal, while Miles is counting the days to his first family visitation, so he can reunite with his newlywed wife and his son. Ashley’s new penchant for partying hard is terrifying those around her – especially her mother-in-law (the always fantastic Helen Hunt).
Marvellous Mrs Maisel
Friday, Amazon Prime Video
This fifth season of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s comedy/drama about the struggles of a pioneering female comic will conclude the series (cue tears, although the last season had not quite continued the brilliance of the first few). Having got her career back on track, housewife turned mic-drop master Miriam Maisel (the terrific Rachel Brosnahan) gets one last chance at success and satisfaction in ’60s New York. We’re all waiting to see Midge’s final punchline.
Celeste Barber Fine Thanks
Streaming, Netflix
It’s been a massive year or two for the Australian comedian. For those who missed out on Celeste’s world tour – or want to relive the hilarity once again – this one-hour special explores (and exploits?) everything from celebrity sex toys to why hot girls can’t dance, and details her giddy euphoria and then total devastation of being invited to Coachella – the same year it was cancelled.
Bondi Rescue
Friday, 7.30pm, Ten
Ten has made the bold decision to fill the popular The Living Room’s Friday night spot with this new series of Bondi Rescue. After two years of closed borders and wet summers, Bondi is back at its busy best as international and interstate visitors return to join locals on Australia’s most famous beach. The lifeguards most definitely have their work cut out for them in one of the busiest summers they’ve ever had.
Barry
Monday, Binge
Following a dark third season, we know that Season 4 will be the hit show’s last. Showrunner and the eponymous Barry, Bill Hader, wants to leave nothing unsaid for his character and the others. The new season’s episodes will pick up with Barry in jail, following his arrest. I have all the things crossed all goes well for Henry Winkler’s Gene Cousineau, Barry’s much put-upon acting coach.
