Sydney WorldPride‘s X-rated Auslan interpreter goes viral

One person stole the show as stars including Kim Petras and Ava Max closed Sydney WorldPride with a massive concert last night. WARNING: Graphic.

Sydney WorldPride came to a triumphant end on Sunday night with one last massive party at the Domain – and one very enthusiastic Auslan interpreter stole the show.

Pop star Kim Petras was one of the headliners for last night’s ‘Rainbow Republic’ closing party, and performed a 13-song set that leaned heavily towards the more explicit material in her catalogue.

Petras, who last month became the first openly trans person to win a Grammy award, performed all seven songs from last year’s controversial Slut Pop EP.

Among them was Throat Goat, her very graphic ode to oral sex – which Auslan interpreter Marc Ethan dutifully performed, lyric for lyric, and projected onto the big screen behind her:

Here’s another clip, of Ethan acting out the lyrics to Petras’ song They Wanna F**k:

Later in the set, Petras performed her recent single Coconuts, a metaphor-heavy celebration of her own breasts. “My coconuts / you can put ‘em in your mouth,” she sang, while behind her, the Auslan interpreter decided to skip the metaphor and act out the barely-concealed subtext:

“My coconuts …”
“My coconuts …”
“ … you can put ‘em in your mouth.”
“ … you can put ‘em in your mouth.”

A star is born.

Rainbow Republic closed off a massive, two-week long Sydney WorldPride, with performances by the likes of Kylie Minogue, Kelly Rowland and Nicole Scherzinger across multiple parties.

Minogue produced perhaps the festival’s most-shared moment when she brought sister Dannii onstage for the final song of her set at the Domain last week, the siblings performing Kylie’s hit All the Lovers together.

The next night, Rowland also had a few surprises up her sleeve, flanked by drag queens dressed as Destiny’s Child members Beyonce and Michelle as she performed a medley of the group’s biggest hits.

Scherzinger’s Saturday night headlining slot at the Bondi Beach Party had a bumpy start, as she kept a restless crowd waiting almost 40 minutes past her advertised start time.

But she won the audience over with a hit-heavy set, and a surprise appearance by former rugby player boyfriend Thom Evans – who she stripped him down to his speedos.

Sunday morning saw around 50,000 early risers – among them PM Anthony Albanese – take part in one of the festival’s biggest events, a pride march over the Harbour Bridge.

Sunday night’s closing concert also saw the official WorldPride handover to the next host city, Washington DC, who will host the event in 2025.
