And then there was one. The shock departure of veteran radio producer Paul Christenson from 2GB yesterday means Alan Jones’s formerly large eight-person production team has finally been dismantled by the radio station’s new management — something Jones feared would happen when he bit the bullet and moved aside in May.
Christenson had been with Jones for close to three decades after starting with the veteran broadcaster at 2UE and moving with Jones to 2GB in 2002.
After Jones retired, Christenson was transferred internally from the radio station’s breakfast show to the drive slot, where he was appointed executive producer of Jim Wilson’s new show.
But yesterday 2GB’s head of content Greg Byrnes emailed staff to inform them their colleague was finishing up.
Inside sources say Christenson has been made redundant by Nine Radio and notified only days before.
He joins other members of Jones’s formerly close-knit team to depart 2GB, including Dan Mullins, who moved with Jones to SKY after 14 years at 2GB, Ross Geddes, Briony Bowman, Tim Barton who left in May, Jake Thrupp who is on Jones’ personal staff and Jacquie Murray, Jones’ secretary.
The only member of Jones’s team to remain on staff at the radio station is James Willis who remained at breakfast and now works for Jones’s replacement Ben Fordham.
Jones’s staff had long been the envy of other 2GB talent who only had a budget to employ one or two producers.
Wilson’s program will now be produced by the team who produced the later Wide World Of Sports show in what insiders are calling a restructure.
