South Australian outback to start in new BBC TV thriller to start filming in autumn

South Australia has landed another TV coup with a new BBC thriller series to start filming in locations here in 2021.

South Australia’s Outback is expected to be a major star in another television series made in the state.

Filming of a new mystery thriller series, The Tourist, written by the team behind Baptiste, The Widow and The Missing, will commence in Autumn 2021.

Federal Arts Minster Paul Fletcher and Premier Steven Marshall announced the coup, that will be supported by a $3.6 million grant in Adelaide on Saturday.

The Tourist is a six-part BBC One and Stan co-production which follows a man who, after losing his memory, is on a quest to unlock the secrets of his identity before those who are trying to kill him catch up with him.

Filming is expected to take place predominantly in regional areas of South Australia, with filming also planned for Adelaide, with significant benefits flowing to regional economies.

“The Tourist will inject an estimated $12.1 million into our local economy and provide opportunities to showcase the skills of our local crew here in SA,” Mr Marshall said.

Producer Lisa Scott, of Highview Productions, said the extraordinary landscape of the Flinders Ranges, which are the lands of the Adnyamathanha people, is some of the oldest country in the world and will be an essential part of The Tourist.

Hollywood movie star Zac Efron is currently in Leigh Creek, in the South Australian outback, making another film called Gold.

Gold is a thriller about greed and the lengths people will go to secure themselves a fortune. It follows two drifters travelling through the outback who stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found.
