Sonia and Marcus Costanzo unveiled as South Australia’s new contestants on new season of My Kitchen Rules

Meet SA’s new My Kitchen Rules contestants – a fiery mother-son duo who don’t like to mince words when it comes to their differences in the kitchen.

There’s always some extra spice when Adelaide’s Sonia and Marcus Costanzo share the kitchen – and it’s got nothing to do with their dishes.

The mother and son duo have warned viewers to expect some fireworks when they star on the new season of Seven’s My Kitchen Rules.

“We’re fiery. People would look at the traditional Italian mother and son and the son is super respectful and they never argue. But we’re not quite like that, we voice our differences,” Sonia, 53, said.

“He’s really messy, he leaves a trail of destruction across the kitchen – he’s a bit of a cowboy, though he’s actually more organised than he looks.

Marcus, 23, added: “There’s always some sort of argument, you won’t come over without hearing us argue. She’s very protective of her kitchen. She wants things tidy, she wants things her way … I won’t say controlling but …”

However, Marcus – who lives at home with Sonia, father Emilio and sisters Emily, 25, and Arielle, 17 – said their disagreements helped them in the long run on the reality cooking show.

“We voice them quickly and we resolve them quickly. We butt heads almost all of the time but it leads to quicker, better, faster solutions,” said Marcus, a business owner who also has more 100,000 followers on his food-focused Tik Tok account.

British culinary queen Nigella Lawson returns for the new season, which premieres on September 4, alongside fellow judges Manu Feildel and Colin Fassnidge.

Marcus said his Seven producers reached out to him to apply for MKR after seeing his Tik Tok account, which features him reviewing local restaurants and posting recipe videos.

“When the opportunity arose, I knew I literally had the perfect teammate. Mum has wanted to be on MKR for years,” he said.

“The competition is tough and it can test your relationship so thank God … we did the show with each other.”

Sonia, a food tech teacher at Plympton International College, said viewers will be able to relate to the pair.

“We’re not pretending, we’re not manufactured, this is how it is – and the food that we can produce under the circumstances will be appealing,” she said.
