Seth Meyers’ best Golden Globes jokes
SETH Meyers certainly didn’t hold back as Golden Globes host, even delivering one joke about Harvey Weinstein that drew audible gasps.
COMEDIAN and late-night host Seth Meyers faced a tough challenge as the host of the first major Hollywood awards show in the wake of Hollywood’s ever-mounting sexual assault scandal.
By all accounts, he passed with flying colours, never shying away from the topic on everyone’s lips but managing to make those in the room and viewers at home laugh, too.
“Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen,” the comedian said, opening the show as the audience of A-listers cheered.
Golden Globes 2018: All the highlights and winners
“Happy New Year Hollywood. It’s 2018 — marijuana is finally allowed, sexual harassment finally isn’t ... it’s gonna be a good year.”
Tasked with hosting the first big ceremony since claims about heavyweights like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey surfaced, Meyers himself joked he felt like “the first dog they shot into outer space”. And almost all of the 15 minute monologue was devoted to taking jabs at the issue.
“There’s a new era underway, and I can tell because it’s been years since a white man has been this nervous in Hollywood. For the male nominees in the room tonight, this will be the first time in three months it won’t be terrifying to hear your name read out loud,” he said.
“This was the year of big little lies and get out — and also television series ‘Big Little Lies’ and the movie ‘Get Out.’”
In a joke directed at Harvey Weinstein, Meyers referred to the disgraced movie mogul as the “elephant not in the room”.
“Harvey Weinstein isn’t here tonight ... I’ve heard rumours he’s crazy and difficult to work with,” he said.
“He’ll be back in 20 years when he’s the first person booed in the in memoriam,” Meyers added, as the audience gasped in shock.
A couple more of the host’s best jokes:
“A string of three words that could not be better designed to infuriate our president — Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The only name that could make his angrier is the ‘Hillary Mexico Salad Association.’”
“They’re going to do another season of House of Cards. Is Christopher Plummer available for that too? I hope he can do a southern accent because Kevin Spacey sure couldn’t.”
“The Shape of Water received the most nominations of any film this year. When I first heard about a film where a woman falls in love with a hideous monster, I thought it was a Woody Allen movie.”
