In a normal year these adorable little papillons would be almost ready for the biggest event of the dog calendar, the Royal Adelaide Show.

This year, however, they’re getting the year off due to the Show’s cancellation, it’s first since the Second World War.

For breeder Kristy Lewis, who has 20 papillons in her Sailoz kennels, it means less time washing and grooming but also less time with her dog breeding friends.

“Normally we’d be bathing them a lot more than we have been to keep their coats in condition for the Royal Adelaide Show,” Ms Lewis said.

“And the Show is a great chance to get out and see everyone and their dogs. Usually you’d be catching up with lots of people from interstate and it’s always good to compare your dogs with other people’s dogs.”

Ms Lewis got her first papillon, named after the French word for butterfly due to their spectacular ears, at the age of 14 and has been hooked on them ever since.

“They’re really a big dog in a small package,” she said.

“They have all the get up and go in the world, and they’re real people dogs.

“They’re becoming more well known as a pet, and once people have one they’ll never go back.”
