7 News Adelaide’s new presenters Rosanna Mangiarelli and Will Goodings enjoyed a stunning success on their debut driving weeknight news, more than doubling the ratings of their nearest rival.
Seven’s flagship 6pm bulletin averaged 136,000 viewers over the hour, while Nine News presented by Kate Collins and Brenton Ragless recorded 61,000.
Seven Adelaide news director, Chris Salter praised Goodings and Mangiarelli – who took over this year when the doyenne of news Jane Doyle retired after 33 years in the chair – as they maintained the network’s stranglehold on the local news ratings.
“Rosanna and Will are outstanding journalists, who have the experience and trust to steer Adelaide’s leading news service,” Salter said.
“They have great chemistry on and off air and bring a new energy to 7 News.
“We knew South Australians would embrace them to fill Jane’s big shoes.”
Collins and Ragless started back behind Nine News desk last Monday, ahead of the network’s Australian Open coverage, and attracted 73,000 viewers at their peak that night against Seven’s summer presenter Mike Smithson who drew 143,000 at its peak.
A Nine spokesperson said the whole newsroom was gearing up for a big 2023.
“Brenton and Kate have been presenting the news together, live from Adelaide for over 10 years and the entire news team is excited for the year ahead,” they said.
It’s still unclear when Channel 10 – who announced in November it would bring back a local news presenter after axing its Adelaide service in August 2020 – will debut its line-up.
Popular weather presenter Kate Freebairn will return as newsreader, with Max Burford as sports presenter and Tiffany Warne on weather duties.
Freebairn – who is still on maternity leave – will stay in Sydney with her partner, PointsBet founder Nick Fahey, and their nine-month-old daughter Airlie. She will present the Adelaide broadcast from Ten’s Sydney studio.
