The British comedian, 54, caused a stir when he poked fun at the reality star’s driving skills, since Caitlyn, then known as Bruce Jenner, was involved in a fatal car crash last year.

“I’m going to be nice tonight,” began his joke. “I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously … now Caitlyn Jenner. What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can you?”

Critics immediately began slamming Gervais and labelling him transphobic, but he fought back via Twitter.

“Suggesting a joke about Caitlin Jenner [sic] is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist,” he wrote on Twitter. “You have every right to be offended. Just don’t cry when no one cares.”

Because of the outcry against his joke, Gervais says he’ll take his act on the road in 2017. “Hosting The Globes has made me want to do a new stand up show next year,” he said. “Now THAT’S when you’re allowed to be offended. You whiney cu**s :).”

Gervais went on to personally defend his joke against one upset follower. “Re: Ricky Gervais’s defence [sic] of his Caitlyn Jenner joke. If your joke is about a person’s transition, it’s probably transphobic,” tweeted the critic.

“What if it was about her killing someone with her car? Would that be okay?” the comedian fired back. “I made a joke about Caitlyn Jenner killing someone in her car. I’m #TransportPhobic.”

Jenner, who dodged charges and recently settled one of many lawsuits following the crash, has remained silent about the joke.
