Speculation is mounting that Rory Sloane will embark on a full-time media career in 2025, with the retired Crows champion linked to dual roles on radio and television.
Rumours suggest Sloane – who hung up the boots in April – could take up an on-air position on SEN Radio’s drivetime shows, either locally or on the national SportsDay program.
He’s also a hot favourite to join Channel 9’s revamped Sunday Footy Show next season, replacing Kane Cornes, following the Port Adelaide star’s much-publicised defection to Channel 7.
Last month, Sloane, 34, was described as the “frontrunner” to fill Cornes’s seat on the Monday edition of Nine’s Footy Classified.
It’s understood Sloane, who’s previously held roles with Channel 7 and FIVEaa, has long been setting himself up for a post-footy career in the media.
In October, the 255-game veteran revealed that he had been approached about a coaching position at Melbourne, but turned the role down, admitting he was still undecided about his future.
“I’ve been taking calls, meetings, seeing what’s going to be best,” he told AFL Trade Radio.
“I love footy … and I’ve been so used to being a player for 16 years, so it’s probably about discovering what’s out there and what I’m going to enjoy doing. Hopefully I’ll find out and make a call in the coming weeks or months.”
A SEN Radio spokeswoman said: “At this stage, SEN have had no conversations with Rory or his management.”
Channel 9 declined to confirm Sloane’s appointment but said the network would be making a “series of other major announcements regarding (its) 2025 AFL coverage”.
Sloane has been contacted for comment.
It’s been a busy off-season in the footy media world, with Cornes’s lucrative deal with Seven the first in a series of major moves.
Cornes’s Channel 9 colleagues Caroline Wilson and Craig Hutchison left the network in September.
Wilson and Hutchison were poached by rivals Seven as the home of footy looks to ramp up its AFL panel shows after falling behind Fox Footy and Nine.
Bombers legend James Hird will join a new-look Footy Classified in 2025, while regular fill-in host Sam McClure and Nine news breaker Tom Morris are also tipped to join the show.
Retired Richmond legend Dustin Martin has been linked to a role with Fox Footy, after the Brownlow Medallist was photographed with station powerbrokers.
His manager Ralph Carr confirmed positive talks were held about Martin joining the star-studded pay-TV stable.
“At this point I am not going to go into specifics as it was a private discussion, but hopefully we will have some news to share when the time is right,” Carr said.
A Fox Footy spokesman said there was always an interest in luring respected footy experts to its on-screen team.
