Former SA senator Natasha Stott Despoja’s husband Ian Smith has been outed as the king of the dancefloor at the Prince’s Trust Global Gala in New York.
The out-there display stunned UK mega pop star Rita Ora who was on stage performing Praising You at the time – so much so that she shared a video of him in action with her more than 16m followers on Instagram.
“Special shout out to the guy at the front – please come to every show,” she wrote on Instagram.
The footage was also shared by former Australian foreign Minister Julie Bishop on social media – and by famous US actor Kate Beckinsale – the 57-year-old political lobbyist and deputy chair of Prince’s Trust Australia busts some serious moves at the swish event at Casa Cipriani.
Speaking to The Advertiser, Mr Smith welcomed the attention his moves received.
“On the one hand you had the extraordinary talent of Rita and on the other you had me,” he said.
“Most importantly a fabulous evening was all for a great cause – supporting the work of His Majesty and the young people he helps around the world through the Prince’s Trust”
Guests at the do included Ms Bishop, who wore a dazzling electric blue gown, Ms Stott Despoja, former Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and supermodel Kate Moss.
Ms Bishop watched as Mr Smith did some fancy footwork before breaking out a “worm”, which is an old-school breakdancing trick that takes a lot of skill, while Ora performed on stage.
On Instagram stories, Ms Bishop, who was shown to be loving the spectacle, captioned her post “I have no words …”.
The video attracted the attention of Ora who took to TikTok sharing it, with commentary: “What?! Find this man, find him. I need him at every show. I need you in my life. Look at this! Are you kidding?!”
Ms Bishop happily obliged, also sharing a happy snap taken after the gala of herself, Ora and Mr Smith – who was wearing a vintage-style Pink Floyd T-shirt – in a post titled “Rita Ora meets The Worm Guy”.
Mr Smith also won the admiration of Beckinsale, who mentioned of him in her post from the evening.
She loved the video, bringing it to the attention of her more than 5.5m fans on Instagram, by telling them to “swipe to the end to see the state @ritaora can get a person into”.
And it appears Beckinsale filmed Mrs Smith dancing because Ora commented on her pots: “Best moment of the whole night honestly thank god you caught this.”
