Lady Gaga’s very Aussie onstage act has fans baffled

“WTF does that mean?”: Lady Gaga provided a very Aussie moment during her latest show down under – but some fans are very confused.

I feel really lucky to be alive, says Lady Gaga

One very Australian moment during Lady Gaga’s latest concert earned the star a rapturous cheer from the audience – but left her international fans baffled.

Gaga was midway through her concert at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on Tuesday night for the Australian leg of her Mayhem World Tour when she uttered a phrase that most Aussies would be familiar with: “We didn’t come here to f**k spiders.”

This crude, nonsensical bit of Aussie slang basically means: We didn’t come here to mess around.

Someone might need to explain that to Gaga’s international fans, though, because footage of the moment is circulating on social media – much to their confusion.

“WTF does that mean???” one fan asked.

“This is a common Australian saying … if you don’t get it don’t worry about it,” another advised.

Expressing your disinterest in making love to an arachnid is certainly easier – and more hygienic – than that most hotly debated of Australian concert traditions: The shoey. Somehow in recent years, it’s become an Australian crowd habit to pressure visiting international singers to skol a beer from their shoe on stage – with mixed results.

Harry Styles obliged during his 2023 Australian tour, although not without protest: “This is one of the most disgusting traditions I’ve ever …” he said before downing the drink.

Country-pop star Kacey Musgraves memorably told a Sydney audience during her 2019 tour that she would not be heeding their demands: “That’s disgusting. I’m not f**king drinking out of your shoe,” she told them.

Gaga’s Australian tour – her first in more than a decade – concludes with two shows at Sydney’s Allianz stadium on Friday and Saturday nights.
