Jennifer Lopez is cancelling her planned 30-date North American tour just weeks before it was due to begin, a decision that the star says has left her “heartsick.”
Lopez’s reason for canning the tour, due to kick off on June 26, is to spend more time with her family - but it comes amid near-constant reports that she and husband Ben Affleck are experiencing marital difficulties, and that the tour itself had struggled to sell tickets.
Lopez announced the news directly to fans via her “On the JLo” newsletter today, telling them of cancelling the tour, “I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down.”
“Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary,” she wrote.
“I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time …”
Representatives for Live Nation told Page Six that the tour, “This Is Me … Live,” was cancelled, saying in a statement, “Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends.”
Sources told the outlet that the cancellation was not due to poor ticket sales, but rather for personal reasons and wanting to be with her children.
But it comes after Lopez’s much-hyped return to music underperformed earlier this year. Her ninth studio album This Is Me... Now was released in February, an album-long ode to her rekindled romance with Affleck that arrived with its own accompanying world-building musical film, and a feature-length behind the scenes documentary about its making.
The album debuted at number 38 in the US; here in Australia, it charted at 82.
J Lo’s North American tour was originally set to focus on the album, but after the record flopped, the tour was hastily rebranded to include all of her greatest hits.
That seemed to help: In recent weeks, ticket sales appeared to be performing better, with some cities having upwards of 90% of seats sold.
J Lo’s other recent career venture, the newly-released Netflix sci-fi movie Atlas, has been a hit with audiences - despite getting terrible reviews.
Decider called the flick, which sees J Lo play a space explorer doing battle with A.I. technology, a “bad, bloated mess.”
It’s been a tough year both career-wise and personally for Lopez, after Affleck reportedly moved out of the couple’s mansion last month.
Lopez and Affleck famously dated in the early noughties, breaking up while they were engaged, partly due to the intense media and public interest in their relationship.
They both later remarried - Affleck to actress Jennifer Garner, while Lopez had 16-year-old twins with fellow singer Marc Anthony - before rekindling their romance and finally marrying in 2022.
That “happy ending” formed the basis for Lopez’s latest musical project, a sequel to her 2002 album This Is Me... Then, released during the couple’s first go at a relationship.
But in recent weeks, the loved-up couple appear to have grown apart, with speculation about their relationship sparked when Lopez attended the Met Gala alone last month.
