A sky full of stars and a stage with a trap door. That was the unfortunate reality for Chris Martin at Coldplay’s Melbourne concert last night when he suffered a fall onstage.
The UK frontman was reading out fans’ posters during a break between songs at Marvel Stadium when he took a tumble and fell through a trap door while walking backwards on the stage.
The collective gasp could be heard from the sellout crowd, but the 47-year-old singer handled it like a pro in the clips floating around social media.
“That’s not planned,” he said, while gracefully trying to get back on stage and into view.
“Thank you for catching me,” he then told a production hand who was underneath the trap door.
It’s believed Martin did not suffer any injuries in the fall, which happened on their fourth and final show in Melbourne before they head to Sydney to perform another four sellout gigs at Accor Stadium this week.
Last month, US pop star Olivia Rodrigo suffered a similar fate when she also fell through a hole on the stage at Rod Laver Arena while on the Melbourne leg of her Guts World Tour.
Rodrigo, 21, was also performing her fourth and final Melbourne show when she fell through the trap door.
“Oh my god that was fun, I’m OK,” she said, while laughing off the stumble and immediately pulling herself back onto the stage. “Wow. Sometimes there’s just a hole in the stage, that’s all right. OK. Where was I?”
Fortunately like Martin, the Drivers Licence singer did not suffer any injuries and was able to continue her tour in Sydney, where she also performed another four sold-out shows, this time at Qudos Bank Arena.
Watching the video back last week on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Rodrigo admitted she was left shaken up by the incident.
“It’s pretty terrifying,” she nervously giggled during her appearance. “I mean the show must go on, that’s showbiz, baby.”
