Abbie Chatfield on why she 'hard launched' her new boyfriend

Award-winning pop star Adam Hyde and his media personality girlfriend Abbie Chatfield make their onscreen debut in the music video for his new single Online Jesus.

The pair ham it up as dating show televangelists in the video from the Peking Duk star’s solo side project called Keli Holiday.

While the video is a hilarious, over-the-top romp featuring over-egged pashes and party scenes, the song is a serious commentary on the state of modern romance and dating apps.

The song was sparked during a conversation with his LA-based Australian collaborator Alex Cameron about the two single men not wanting to go on the apps to find love.

“When you’re having the conversation about dating, romance and courtship in 2024, you’re talking about these apps and the men who use them,” Hyde said.

“The vast majority of case studies that I’ve done with friends is that the men on these apps genuinely think they’re God’s gift to women or they play the apps as if they’re a game.

“Me and Alex were newly single when we had this conversation and we were talking about navigating modern romance and what do we do, and I was like ‘Dude, I can’t do those apps, they irk me.’”

So the pair wrote a song about the “Online Jesus” who is flexing in his profile picture, swiping right on a stream of women’s profiles and “telling all his mates what a God he is.”

Hyde said while he and Chatfield had discussed doing a video project together, they were surprised how the timing of the release of Online Jesus matched with her finishing up another season of the Binge reality series FBoy Island, which features three women trying to uncover who are the “nice guys” looking for love versus the self-proclaimed players.

The loved-up pop star and his influencer girlfriend have delighted their fans with their public displays of affection posted online and it was no different on the set when they were filming the video.

“We felt like high school kids working together; it was the best way to shoot ever, making out between takes and giving each other the eye across the room,” he said.

Hyde said he has adored being in his “love bubble” with his partner but they will soon be sending some time apart as Chatfield kicks off her Trauma Dump national tour next week.

“For the time being we are pretty cosy … I’m so grateful to be able to experience this feeling with someone I adore,” he said.

“It’s a real treat to wake up every morning knowing I have this person I know is soft and gorgeous and punk and just so inspiring and to share time and romance with her,” he said.

“All the beauty that comes with love, it’s the pinnacle emotion and when we both started feeling that together, it was ‘here we go!’”

Online Jesus is released on Friday via streaming services and the video will premiere on October 10.
