Murder on the Dancefloor singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor announced as Bondi Beach Party headliner

The artist behind one of the moment's most viral TikTok songs will headline one of the two-week festival’s biggest events.

British pop icon Sophie Ellis-Bextor has been announced as headline performer at one of the most anticipated Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras’ parties.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to the two-week festival celebrating LQBTGIA+ communities' which kicks off on Friday.

The Murder on the Dancefloor songstress has been announced as the headline act for the festival’s annual Bondi Beach Party on February 24.

Her 2001 dance hit has climbed to the top of the charts more than two decades on from its release after it featured in a scene of one of the summer’s biggest films, Saltburn.

She’ll be joined by Slayyyter (USA), and Jay Jay Revlon (UK), Lagoon Femshaymer (UK), and Corey Craig (US).

Meanwhile, local acts Tyoow, Mama de Leche, and Beth Yen (ACT) will also be as the party gest going.

Mardi Gras CEO Gil Beckwith said the 46th annual festival will celebrate unity and togetherness.

“For the next 17 days, let’s embrace the power of our community,” she said.

“We’re here to connect, to share, and to envision a bright future together.

“In a world that can sometimes feel overshadowed by darkness, our festival stands as a beacon of light.

“So, I urge you, come with open hearts and minds, ready to connect, celebrate, and embody the inclusivity that lies at the very core of our community.”

Festival goers will also enjoy get to enjoy the hugely popular parade, the Sissy Ball, beloved Laneway, and the iconic Mardi Gras Party.

However, Mardi Gras Fair Day has been cancelled after asbestos was discovered in Victoria Park, near the city’s CBD.

“Fair Day is one of our most loved events, and is attended by over 70,000 people each year,” Ms Gill said.

“It breaks our heart to see this Sunday not go ahead, but given the safety concerns, we must put our communities’ wellbeing first.

“The rest of our festival continues unchanged, offering many chances over the 17 days for our communities to come together in celebration and solidarity.”
