Britney Spears’ restrictive conservatorship comes to an end after 13-year-long battle

Britney Spears has officially been released from the restrictive conservatorship placed on her in 2008 by her dad, Jamie Spears.

Britney Spears’ restrictive conservatorship finally ends

Britney Spears’ long-running conservatorship has finally come to an end.

The star was officially released from the restrictive arrangement after a Los Angeles judge ruled on Friday (local time) that it was “untenable” and reflective of a “toxic environment.”

Spears celebrated the news on Instagram, saying it was the “best day ever” and expressing her love for fans behind the Free Britney movement.

“Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy️! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day! Best day ever. Praise the Lord. Can I get an Amen?” she wrote.

She also updated the Free Britney hashtag with one that read, “#FreedBritney”.

She also shared several uncaptioned posts of herself dressed in white shorts, and a light green crop top.

In one, she put on a defiant display while staring into the camera as she rocked side to side.

The conservatorship had been in place since 2008 with Spears’ dad Jamie Spears at its core until late September this year.

Judge Brenda Penny ruled that certified accountant John Zabel would play the role of Spears’ conservator until her lawyer Mathew Rosengart could terminate it completely.

The megastar set off the Free Britney movement this year when she spoke publicly for the first time about the “abusive” terms she had been subject to under the conservatorship.

During a blistering 24-minute testimony in June, Spears called her dad an “abusive” conservator and accussed him of forcing her to go on tour in 2018 and sending her to a mental health facility against her will in 2019.

Her dad had been at the helm of Spears’ career and estimated $60 million (A$83.6 million) estate for more than 13 years, in a role which paid him a monthly salary of $16,000 (A$22,300).

Spears claimed during her June hearing her conservators would not allow her to have her IUD (contraceptive device) removed, and once put her on lithium “out of nowhere,” a drug she described as so strong that she “couldn’t even have a conversation” with her parents.

“I shouldn’t be in a conservatorship if I can work and provide money and work for myself and pay other people. It makes no sense,” argued the singer, who performed a four-year, 248-show Las Vegas residency and judged a season of The X Factor while under the conservatorship.

Judge Penny said in September it was in Spears’ “best interest” to suspend her dad, 69, from the restrictive legal arrangement that he established in 2008, controlling his famous daughter’s personal, medical and financial affairs.

“The current situation is untenable,” she said after hearing arguments from both sides. “It reflects a toxic environment which requires the suspension of James Spears.”

Addressing a huge crowd of Free Britney supporters outside court following the September decision, Spears’ lawyer Mathew Rosengart said the battle had been “a lot of hard work”.

“It’s been intense. I’m proud, Britney’s proud,” Mr Rosengart said.

“I think the support of the #FreeBritney movement has been instrumental. To the extent that it allowed my firm to carry the ball across the finish line, I thank them as well.”
