Award-winning singer songwriter and doctor Gordi has revealed how her new single brought Coldplay frontman Chris Martin to tears during a secret gathering with local artists at a Melbourne studio this week.
The alternative music star posted about the “truly insane” encounter at the Bakehouse Studios on Monday, where the pop superstar hung out with musicians for insight into the local music scene.
“Apparently when Chris Martin goes to other countries, he likes to meet local artists. Truly an amazing man; who could be arsed doing that when they’re on tour,” she said.
“I found myself last night in a room with six or seven other artists in Melbourne, and Chris Martin, he’s asking us what the scene is like going on.”
Gordi, aka Sophie Payten, said after a bit of chat about the Melbourne music scene with the group of artists which included pop singer songwriter Kian and indie rockers Radio Free Alice, Martin asked if “there’s an artist in the room named Gordi.”
“Yep, that’s me,” she said.
“He said ‘I’ve listened to your music. It’s really beautiful.’ I said ‘Thank you Chris Martin.’”
Martin spied a piano in the studio where they were hanging out and asked if anyone played.
When Gordi put her hand up, he requested she play him a song and then joined her on the piano stool.
“At this point, I’m thinking ‘I really wish I hadn’t just eaten four giant lamb chops,’” she joked.
Gordi, who is also a qualified doctor and returned to medicine to help on the frontline of pandemic response in 2020, decided to share her soaring new single, the stunning, atmospheric song she recorded with Irish artist SOAK.
“I started playing the song, and this moment in the second verse, I’m like “What the actual f... is going on? I’m with Chris Martin, pull yourself together,’” she recalled.
“I close my eyes, I lean into the emotion of the song. Next thing I know, the song’s over, I open my eyes, look up at Chris Martin, and he’s crying, tears coming out of his eyes.
“He said really nice things about the song. He told me it was beautiful, he said songs like that deserve to be heard.
“It was just the most insane, beautiful moments of my life. And I can’t believe that no one got it on camera.”
Coldplay open their sold-out Music of the Spheres tour in Melbourne on Wednesday and will play eight shows over the next two weeks.
