Disney has announced that Ryan Gosling is joining the Star Wars franchise for a brand new blockbuster movie.
While the franchise has endured numerous failures and disappointments in recent years, including cancelled shows and box office flops, Disney hopes the new movie will set the series on a new path.
Star Wars: Starfighter will open on May 28, 2027, the same month as fellow Disney blockbuster Avengers: Secret Wars.
The film is a stand-alone movie that is entirely disconnected from the famous Skywalker Saga, which focuses primarily on Luke Skywalker and his father.
“The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,” said Gosling as he announced his role in the movie during a Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”
Gosling went on to reveal that he grew up using Star Wars-themed bed sheets and had been a fan all his life.
“She [his mother] still has them, obviously,” Gosling joked. “Naturally, she thought that it might be something that the fans would appreciate, but I suspect that she just sort of wants to justify years of hoarding.”
He added: “I was probably dreaming about Star Wars before I even saw the film. And it’s probably framed my idea of what a movie even was.”
Speaking to fans, director Shawn Levy confirmed the uncharted territory for the upcoming film, “This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure.”
He added that the movie will feature “all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.”
Levy is a director and producer of both film and television series, including Deadpool & Wolverine and Stranger Things.
Gosling’s role came after it was revealed that the latest winner of the Best Actress Oscar, Mikey Madison, turned down a role in the movie.
Madison has reportedly been entertaining offers between Levy’s new Star Wars project and an offer to star in Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie at Sony, which is set to star Austin Abrams.
“I don’t know if those two movies conflict and she’ll be forced to choose one or the other, but something tells me she’ll take Lucasfilm up on its offer,” said a source recently. “After all, the chance to be in a Star Wars movie is a rare opportunity coveted by many actors.”
