MODEL, vlogger, singer, YouTuber, socialite and make-up artist James Charles has apologised for live-tweeting a bad review of horror hit It.
His now-deleted comments ended up attracting the attention of one of the film’s stars — and it sparked an internet backlash.
Charles, 18, was just five minutes into the film — a record-breaking box office smash — when he started posting negative comments on Twitter from the cinema.
The model reportedly wrote, “OK, five minutes in and It was already awful stay tuned for updates”. He followed that up by calling the movie “so predictable”.
His comments caught the attention of Finn Wolfhard, one of the child stars of the film, who replied: “Why are you on your phone in the movie theatre? Rule 1.”

Charles, who became CoverGirl’s first male spokesmodel earlier this year, then saw his negative commentary go viral.

So he deleted the tweets and recorded and posted a two-minute apology video to his 292,000 Twitter followers from an Uber.
In his confusing statement, he insisted that he didn’t mean to give the film a negative review and he actually really enjoyed it — but still continued his criticism.
“I tweeted that it was awful. It was the social media exaggerator coming out in me. It was rude and obnoxious and I’m apologising for it because that was wrong,” he said.
But he said he was still “personally disappointed” in It because there weren’t enough jump scares in the film.

After more negative feedback, Charles later tweeted that “the internet is the meanest” and said his job “isn’t fun anymore”.

It was made for a budget of US$35 million but broke records to become the biggest box office debut for a horror in history, raking in US$123 million.
It is a remake of a 1980 miniseries, which was based on the Stephen King novel. A sequel is due out in 2019.
