6 UNDERRATED FILMS OF 2018
CARGO
This eerily effective hybrid of zombie thriller and apocalyptic odyssey deserves to be seen and appreciated by as wide an audience as possible.
BLACKKKLANSMAN
A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
SEARCHING
A tension-riddled story tracks the efforts of a worried father to find his absent daughter before authorities switch the handling of her case from Missing Persons to Homicide.
12 STRONG
As a war movie, 12 Strong does a tremendous job of continually ramming home the terrifying nature of an assignment where the stakes were so high, and chances of success were so very low.
THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN
Fittingly, for one of the greatest movie stars of all time, Redford makes his exit with a classy, irresistible display that will charm the socks off one and all.
THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME
The going can get ferociously, gorily violent at times, and not always to the intended comic effect.
6 OVERRATED FILMS OF 2018
OCEAN’S 8
For a production harnessing a star power of considerable luminosity, it is disappointing to see how little a glow comes off happenings here.
JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM
Between the big bites and sudden frights, there ain’t too much to be remembered past the closing credits.
THE EQUALIZER 2
The climactic dispensation of rough justice — impressively staged during a wild hurricane, of all things — is almost worth the price of admission. However, the grind of the getting-there could have you requesting a discount.
THE BREAKER UPPERERS
Though this uneven, yet endearing affair will find a loyal cohort of fans wherever it plays, it is hard to get away from the feeling this is more of a missed opportunity than a don’t-miss proposition.
FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD
When it comes to conjuring true movie magic from the exploits of series hero Newt Scamander and his many friends and foes, this sequel (like its predecessor) struggles to cast a captivating spell for long.
UPGRADE
Though very slickly executed for a low-budget production, Upgrade continually loses itself in thematic and creative no-man’s-lands.
