Chris Hemsworth bares all in new Thor trailer

Chris Hemsworth is never shy about revealing all of himself, and the new Thor trailer is no exception.

We would never diminish Chris Hemsworth’s many cerebral achievements by calling him a beefcake, but when this kind of emphasis is placed on his glistening, sculpted physique, the label kind of jumps out.

The second trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder was released today and while it reveals more of what to expect from the 29th Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, there’s no denying that it very, very much played up its leading man’s appeal.

The stinger at the end of the two minutes and 15 seconds long trailer involves a scene in which Hemsworth, as the god of thunder, bares all. And we mean all, even if audiences are not graced with the full view.

In the scene, Thor is standing in an arena, covered by a cloak when Zeus, played by Russell Crowe, uses his powers to undisguise him with a flick. With his clothes flying off his body, leaving nothing but some magical shackles, an irate Thor screams back, “You flick too hard, dammit!”.

It’s still a Marvel movie so there’s not going to be any hardcore nudity but there is a wide shot from behind, but with Hemsworth’s bum pixelated, while the rest of the scene is played out in a mid-shot of his naked torso.

Mirroring the reaction of the audience, the scene cuts to, first, Zeus’ entourage fainting and then Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) watching on with amusement while munching on snacks.

The trailer also revealed the first look at Christian Bale’s pigment-challenged villainous Gorr the God Butcher, a killer with a predilection for ending deities. He sounds very serious about his mission.

Plus, after only the briefest glimpse of Jane’s return in the first teaser trailer, the newly crowned Mighty Thor has much more of a starring role here. She gets to flex her muscles – both actual and dramatic – as the ex-lovers reunite after eight years, seven months and six days apart.

Thor may still be hung up after the astrophysicist turned superhero – which is not to say all scientists are not superheroes in their way, but can they wield Mjolnir?

Thor: Love and Thunder is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, which saw Thor take off with the Guardians of the Galaxy, leaving Valkyrie in charge of New Asgard. In his search for peace and purpose, he encounters Gorr the God Butcher and must call on his allies and friends for the ensuing battle.

Directed by Taika Waititi, who has a voice and motion-capture role as Korg, Thor: Love and Thunder also stars the Guardians crew including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan. There are cameos from the likes of Jeff Goldblum, Matt Damon, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Hemsworth and Sam Neill.

Thor: Love and Thunder is in cinemas on July 8.
