More than three decades in the making: Black, white and teal revolution comes to SA sports radio

Adelaide’s airwaves are set for another shake-up, with a Port Adelaide legend to become the first Alberton product to co-host a traditionally Crows show.

It comes as no surprise that Stephen Rowe and Tim Ginever first met on the footy field.

It was 1987, Ginever was in his fifth season at Port Adelaide and Rowe was a new recruit for Norwood.

They duly got into a fight on Alberton Oval’s outer wing.

Ginever recalls: “Something happened – it was probably minor – but I just gave him one and he went: ‘No. Way’. And it was on.

“We had this scuffle … after I ran off and thought: ‘He’s mad’.”

Later that year, Rowe and Ginever ended up at the same New Year’s Eve party; they never fought on the footy field again.

But expect fireworks to be reignited between the pair, when Ginever joins Rowe’s weekday drivetime sports show as its new co-host.

Renamed The FIVEaa Sports Show with Rowey and Timmy G, the significance of Ginever’s voice won’t be lost on any fans of the black, white and teal.

The 56-year-old will be the first Port Adelaide background host in the show’s 32-year history, a history which has seen the likes of Graham Cornes, Ken Cunningham and Mark Bickley share the airwaves.

Ginever – a 314-game, seven-time premiership winning Magpie and SANFL Hall of Famer – said the shake up of the long-running show would return the show to its heritage, which always had co-hosts.

“To put that Port Adelaide flavour in for the first time … one of the reactions you’d expect from Port people straightaway is: ‘Good, we’ve got representation for change’ and I think that will initially come in, (but the show’s) not just about bantering about those two clubs.

“It’s more so about having a discussion and debate together, and then allowing listeners then to join in.”

Rowe, a 29-game Crow who has been part of the show since 2009 and been presenting solo since 2020, said he was looking forward to the reinvention of the show.

“We finally do get some balance … we’re blessed as a station and then as a state that we’ve got that: Norwood/Port, Crows/Port; good versus bad; it’s blue collar/white-collar, chardonnay versus cheap beer,” he said tongue-in-cheek.

“We’ve got what we always wanted (balance); it’s taken a lot longer than we thought.”

Ginever, who has been involved in radio since the late 1990s including on FIVEaa’s Sunday Roast, will start on air from Monday, August 8.
