Late comedian Cal Wilson honoured ahead of 2024 AACTAs

Much-loved comedian Cal Wilson has been nominated in a new category at the 2024 AACTA awards, three months after her sudden death from cancer. See the full list of nominees.

Tributes flow for Cal Wilson following shock death

Much-loved comedian Cal Wilson has been recognised with a posthumous nomination at the 2024 AACTA Awards.

Wilson, who passed away after a short battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer in October, has been nominated in the Best Comedy Performer award for her work on Foxtel Group’s The Great Australian Bake Off. Other nominees include Hard Quiz’s Tom Gleeson; The 1% Club’s Jim Jefferies; Luke McGregor and Nina Oyama for Taskmaster Australia season 1, RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under’s Rhys Nicholson and The Weekly’s Charlie Pickering.

GABO co-host Natalie Tran, who is nominated in the same category, said true improv comedians such as her late friend are “rare and they are brilliant”.

“They possess with and cleverness and can adapt both at rapid speed in a way that fills a room with joy,” Ms Tran said.

“Cal had that talent and what’s amazing is that it was the second most impressive thing about her. The first was what an excellent person she was.”

Judge Darren Purchese – who joined the new panel alongside Brit cook Rachel Khoo, Tram and Wilson this year, said Wilson was “a shining light and a beautiful person”.

“Cal was a shining light in our industry and a beautiful person,” he said.

“We all know how talented she was, and quick and funny but Cal was also the consummate professional. Always on hand to make production easy and could handle every situation. She was a joy to work with on The Great Australian Bake Off and really showed the meaning of love, teamwork, talent and joy to everyone on set.

“She will be missed by many but her legacy of kindness and strength will live on. I loved Cal and so did so many others.”

Gleeson – who has two AACTA Awards – tips Wilson will win the award.

“Everyone knows how funny, witty and kind Cal was but she was also very smart,” he said.

“Very funny. Very clever. When we were on set for Skithouse back in the day, we’d all do the quiz in the newspaper.

“She beat the entire cast every bloody day. It was infuriating. She’ll probably win this award too.”

The nominations were announced Saturday morning on the Gold Coast – the new home of the AACTAs, which celebrate the Australian Film and Television industry, under a three-year deal with the Queensland Government.

Binge’s hugely-popular Colin From Accounts is among the most-nominated TV series with 10 nods including Best Acting in a Comedy and Best Narrative Comedy Series for its debut six episodes. ABC’s The Newsreader tops the list with 15 noms, Prime Video’s The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart with 12 and its steaming stablemate Deadloch with 10.

While in the film categories – The New Boy tops the list with 12 nominations, Talk to Me attracted 11, Shayda nine and Sweet As seven.

The winners will be announced on February 10. The new date designed to bring the ceremony in line with the international awardsschedule.

A five-day festival will accompany the AACTA Awards. Spanning February 7-11, the “celebration of film, TV, streaming, music, and digital content” will include a day devoted exclusively to First Nations content and creatives, networking hubs, and a Screen Careers Expo for those curious about pursuing a career in film or television.
