Kid Laroi: Rising Sydney rap star becomes youngest to hit top spot on ARIA charts

A 17-year-old rap artist from inner-city Sydney has broken the record as the youngest person to have a number one record on the ARIA charts.

Tell Me Why (The Kid Laroi)

Waterloo teen Kid Laroi has made history as the youngest Australian solo artist to top the ARIA album chart.

Laroi’s release F*CK LOVE (SAVAGE) has knocked Harrison Craig’s 2013 debut, More Than A Dream, off his post. He was 18 at the time of his number one.

“Wow, this is insane,” Laroi said. “Number one in my own country means more to me than anything in the world. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and been with me through all of this. I love you all and I can’t wait to see you all again soon.”

F*CK LOVE relegates last week’s chart topper, kids album Bluey, to number two spot. It seems to be a year of record breaking results as Bluey made history as the first children’s music album to top the ARIA Album Chart.

In third position is Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous – The Double Album, followed by Taylor Swift’s, evermore, and Pop Smoke’s Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon.

Laroi, whose real name is Charlton Howard, is now based in Los Angeles.

The chart result follows Laroi reaching one billion global streams for the album and more than 150 million streams in Australia alone across his catalogue of music.

His hit singles include Without You, So Done and Go.

On the ARIA singles chart this week, Olivia Rodrigo’s debut Driver’s Licence is number one, ahead of Glass Animals’ Heat Waves and Kid Laroi’s Without You in third place. Tones and I’d Fly Away is number four while 24kGoldn featuring Iann Dior’s Mood is at five.

Laroi’s F*CK LOVE has spent 27 weeks on the charts.

His debut mixtape scored Laroi ARIA Award nominations for beat male artist, breakthrough artist and best hip hop release in 2020.

Of the number one result, Sony Music Australia and New Zealand boss Denis Handlin said:

“To take home a number one album at the age of 17 is very special and Laroi is so well deserving of this success. To see his development from when we first met him at 12 years old is incredible. Laroi is the real deal – we will give him all the support in the world and at the same time, get out of the way so that his brilliance gives him the creative wings to fly.”

Laroi is a member of the Kamilaroi people, from which he took on his stage name.
