Jason Chong to replace Peter Goers and Spence Denny to return to ABC Adelaide radio in 2024

ABC Adelaide has unveiled its replacement for Peter Goers while a broadcasting favourite will make a return to the airwaves as part of its new-look radio lineup in 2024.

Nikolai Beilharz, Jason Chong and Jo Laverty are a part of the major shakeup at ABC Adelaide’s radio in 2024.

Comedian Jason Chong will replace the retiring Peter Goers while veteran presenter Spence Denny will make a return to the airwaves as part of a major shakeup to ABC Adelaide’s radio lineup in 2024.

Funnyman Chong, a Fringe Festival favourite and regular fill-in presenter at the ABC, will take over the evening program made famous by the outgoing Goers.

Sunday Mail columnist Goers announced last month he was retiring from broadcasting after 20 years with the ABC.

“For the past year I’ve had the opportunity to watch and listen to Goers the master at work,” said Chong, a regular guest on Jules Schiller’s Drive program, and fill-in presenter on Afternoons, Drive Weekends and Evenings.

“I want to bring that same warmth and intelligence to the dedicated nighttime audience. When I heard Peter was retiring, I thought you’d have to be very brave or stupid to step into his shoes. Perhaps I’m both?”

A longtime favourite with listeners, Denny will return in 2024 to host the Sunday Mornings program.

Spence Denny is making a return to the airwaves as part of a major shakeup to ABC Adelaide’s radio lineup in 2024.

In January 2022, the award-winning broadcaster announced he was retiring, effective immediately, after 33 years on-air.

Denny had worked in several roles over the years, from roving reporter to drivetime host and as part of the ABC Grandstand sports team. For the 11 years of his career, he’d been on the early morning shift alongside a range of breakfast hosts.

After two years on breakfast alongside Stacey Lee, Nikolai Beilharz will continue with the station in a new role.

He will move to the other end of the day, and replace Sonya Feldhoff on the afternoon shift.

As revealed by The Advertiser earlier this month, Feldhoff and Schiller are the ABC’s new breakfast duo, following Lee’s decision to quit the station and transfer to rival FIVEaa’s afternoons timeslot – now in direct competition with her former ABC co-host.

In other changes, veteran broadcaster Jo Laverty is coming to Adelaide from the NT and will present Drive.

Laverty has been with the ABC for more than 20 years, most recently hosting breakfast on ABC Radio Darwin since 2019.

ABC Radio Adelaide Manager Graeme Bennett said the revamped line up for 2024 is “stacked with a crop of incredible broadcasters”, combing well-known voices and new talent.

“I’m excited for audiences to get to know our new presenters and hear some familiar voices in exciting new roles,” he said.
