Radio star Andy Lee dropped a bombshell on-air today - and Hamish Blake confessed he and Zoe Foster Blake had been “crying” at the news.

Comedian Andy Lee dropped some big personal news on today’s episode of Hamish & Andy: He’s engaged to his long-time partner, Bec Harding.

Harding joined the comedy duo on the latest episode of their podcast, available on LiSTNR, to share all the details on how he proposed to her after almost 10 years together.

“I asked Bec to marry me on Sunday,” Lee announced six minutes into the podcast, playing it cool by dropping the news after some other, less interesting life updates.

With Bec on the line, co-host Hamish Blake couldn’t resist poking some fun: “Is it a bit quick? Is it a bit sudden?” he asked the couple, who’ve had to weather some nosy speculation from fans in recent years demanding to know when they were getting hitched.

“We really should’ve given in another couple of years,” Harding joked.

But Blake also spoke seriously about how overjoyed he and wife Zoe Foster Blake were at the news, revealing they’d both been “crying” with happiness.

Lee revealed that the couple’s “new old house” – a derelict heritage-listed property in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn that he and Harding bout in 2021 for $8.5 million – had a starring role in his proposal.

Standing in front of the house’s marble fireplace with Harding on the weekend, he pretended he could see something inside – then pulled out a napkin.

“When I was down there, I stayed on one knee and I gave her another napkin — because when I first met her at the cafe, I wrote on a napkin my details,” he explained.

She said yes! The happy couple, finally engaged.

The proposal took place inside the old Melbourne mansion they’re renovating.

Lee also shared the news on Instagram today, sharing photos from the engagement and writing: “People keep saying we’ve rushed into this but we don’t care what people say!”

Lee and Harding originally met in a Melbourne cafe where she was working as a waitress. Lee was so enamoured with her he ended up scrawling his contact details on a napkin for her.

“She was attractive, but it was more her bubbly personality and how she wasn’t good at her job,” he said in a column for The Age in 2022.

“She’d leave a table knowing about the person’s grandchildren or dog, but forget their order. I ordered cups of tea I never drank and eventually left a note on a napkin.”

From there, the pair started dating – but it wasn’t all smooth sailing.

They made their public debut as a couple at the 2015 Australian Open, which kick-started a rocky period where they split up for six months.

They’ve been open about their ups and downs, including a six-month period where they split up.

“It was a really sad, tough time – and confronting because I had to accept that what I do for a living created the situation,” Lee told The Age in 2022, revealing the pressures of dating in the public eye had briefly forced them apart.

Speaking to Stellar in a joint interview in 2022, Harding confessed that after so many years together, the couple had started to feel some pressure to get married and start a family.

“It is really unfair, and there is also pressure to have kids, as well,” she said.

“And unfortunately for women, we do have a little bit of a clock that’s ticking.”

But she added that the couple is “loving where we’re at, really”.

“We’ve bought a house. We’ve got a dog, and we have a few other projects, too.”
