Guy Sebastian has a bright future on the big screen according to the man behind the singer’s debut feature film.
Sebastian has earned rave reviews for his star-turn in Hindi Vindi, a Bollywood musical drama by executive producer and writer Jay Sharma.
Mr Sharma said the former Adelaide performer was super talented and showed off a surprising comedic side in front of the camera, already receiving plaudits from test audiences.
“We were a bit nervous obviously, it was his first acting gig. But we just did some screeners of the film and it looks like Guy’s the best actor in the film right now,” he said.
“He’s the comic relief in the film and people love him.”
Sebastian said he joined the cast earlier this year, and also wrote and recorded two songs for its soundtrack.
“Well, this may seem out of the blue … I joined the cast of a Bollywood movie earlier this year!!” the Voice coach, 42, wrote on social media.
“It was a surreal experience for me, working alongside a really stellar cast with iconic Bollywood actors, in my very first acting role – it was something that I will never forget.”
The movie, an Indian-Australian co-production, tells the story of Kabir (Mihir Ahuja), a teenager with mixed race parents, whose Indian mother passed away when he was a young child.
He struggles to communicate with his grandma, who doesn’t speak English, and so he goes on a mission to learn about his heritage. Sebastian plays the father of the lead character.
“As soon as I read the script I instantly loved the story,” Sebastian said.
“I am really proud of this project, & if anything at least I know I made my Indian mum proud! It will be released in theatres all over Australia in September!”
Mr Sharma said Sebastian was the ultimate professional on the set.
“He’s a celebrity but... he worked so hard on the film,” he said.
“He’s such a talented guy, he’s so blessed.
“I will be surprised if he doesn’t pursue this (acting). He should. I will definitely reach out to him for my next film.”
The musical drama, shot in Sydney and regional NSW, is directed by Ali Sayed and also veteran Bollywood star Neena Gupta.
Hindi Vindi is produced by Australian film production 24Six films and India-based Shah Entertainment Media (SEM), with development funding from Screen Australia.
Now based in Sydney, Sebastian has been a household name since winning Australian Idol in 2003. Since then, he has topped the charts, collaborated and toured with huge names, won ARIA Awards and fronted reality singing show The Voice as a coach.
