Fairy-floss gowns, thigh-high splits and sharp tuxes – Australian stars Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman (and more) turned heads at the Golden Globes.

Golden Globes 2020: Celebs dazzle on the red carpet

Fairy-floss gowns, thigh-high splits and sharp tuxes – the Golden Globes were a head-turning debut to this year’s awards season.

From strapless and sleek dresses, to tulle and flounce, Hollywood saw its first proper red carpet of the year in Los Angeles … and it did not disappoint.

Known as the biggest party in Hollywood, the Golden Globes mark the start of the 2020 awards show calendar, with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and 1917 among the big winners.

Australian star Margot Robbie was an early contender for best dressed of the night, wearing strapless Chanel and dressed by Hollywood mega-stylist, Kate Young.

Her sparkly Chanel top featured 4,750 sequins and beads, taking 225 hours for the French luxury house to create, and was teamed with a white silk skirt from Chanel’s autumn/winter 2019 collection.

Celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff finished off Robbie’s red carpet look with Chanel’s Rouge Coco Flash lipstick.

Speaking to E! outside the Golden Globes, Bombshell nominee Robbie said she used social media to prepare for her role as ambitious reporter Kayla Pospisil in the political drama, to uncover what “conservative millennial girls were thinking and saying”.

“I didn’t understand her to begin with,” Robbie told Variety of the role, ahead of the Golden Globes.

“But my process is to do a ton of research, consider every single option, know every single situation, scenario, thought and motivation inside and out, so I can step onto set and then let it all go.”

Princess-style pastels and tulle were early trends of this year’s Golden Globes, as seen on Dakota Fanning, Kirsten Dunst and Disney starlet Sofia Carson.

And Gwyneth Paltrow had a rare red carpet misstep in this flesh-flashing frock.

E! red carpet host Ryan Seacrest said Hollywood’s thoughts were with Australians dealing with “the horrific wildfires”.

Meantime, Netflix has 17 Golden Globe nominations, ahead of HBO at 15, with multiple frontrunners for the night’s most prestigious prize, Best Drama, including Martin Scorsese’s gangster epic The Irishman and the heart-wrenching Marriage Story.

Naomi Watts, Kirsten Dunst, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists star Sofia Carson (wearing an OTT ballet-pink Giambattista Valli gown), were among the eye-popping style stars of the night.

The Golden Globes were decided by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), comprised of about 90 members of the media.

In 2019, the Golden Globes correctly picked the Oscar winner in every film category except for best musical score.

Sunglasses-clad Ricky Gervais returned for a record fifth time as host, delivering on his promise to target “pretension and hypocrisy”.

“Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse,” Gervais said. “But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”

Renée Zellweger, who seemed to skip the red carpet entirely, won Best Actress for her role as Judy Garland in the biopic, Judy.

When asked by Vogue how she felt about her performance being the subject of awards chatter, Zellweger was quick to brush it off.

“I don’t think about that. I’m on the inside of this experience, you know?” Zellweger previously told Vogue Australia. “It’s a blessing to be part of that celebration of her and her legacy, so I mean that’s treasure isn’t it?”
