Hollywood star Margot Robbie could have some homegrown redemption from her Oscars snub following her nominations in the publicly-voted AACTA Audience Choice Awards.
Robbie – who will attend Saturday February 10’s glittering ceremony in its new home on the Gold Coast – is among the finalists for the popular awards.
The Australian Academy headed online again to determine the nominees in seven categories including favourite films, TV shows, Australian media personalities and digital creators.
Robbie’s mega-box office smash hit Barbie is up for favourite film and the 33-year-old herself is up against Jenna Ortega, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lawrence, Millie Bobby Brown and Sydney Sweeny in the favourite actor category.
Rising Australian star Jacob Elordi – who was in the controversial Saltburn and can currently be seen as Elvis in Priscilla – is up against fellow Aussie hunk Chris Hemsworth and Hollywood leading men Ryan Gosling, Timothee Chalamet and Vin Diesel in Australia’s favourite actor section.
While Luke and Sassy Scott, Maddy MacRae and Sofia Ligeros are in the running for Australia’s Favourite Digital Creator.
This year, AACTA ran a poll on social media, asking audiences to tell them the stars, productions, media personalities and digital creators they wanted to see in contention. Thousands of responses poured in, determining the short-list for each award.
The popular audience choice categories, which run alongside the peer-voted prizes, will be announced at the AACTA awards night presented by the Foxtel Group at the HOTA on the Gold Coast next weekend.
Rebel Wilson – who has been based back in Sydney with her family – fiancee Ramona Agruma and 13-month-old daughter Royce – is hosting the event and she’s pumped.
The Pitch Perfect actor stole the show when she hosted the 2022 BAFTA Awards with attendees commenting at the time she deserved a standing ovation for her hosting duties.
That’s despite everyone copping it from her barbs during the ceremony including Dwayne Johnson – “Whenever I want to make myself cry, I think how much The Rock was paid for ‘Jungle Cruise,” Wilson joked.
Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, nominated for Best Lead Actress for her role as a renegade nun in The New Boy – which has notched up 12 nominations in all – will also be among the big names. And Oscar-winning director Ron Howard – who is filming feature film Eden starring Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl and Sweeney on the Gold Coast – will join Australian stars in celebrating the industry.
“I have always been impressed with the professionalism and creative spirit of the Australian film community,” Howard has said.
Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer – whose acclaimed Foxtel and Binge comedy Colin From Accounts is one of the most nominated with 10 nods – will also be there.
Notable winners from 2022 include Kat Clark for Best Digital Creator, Heartbreak High for Best TV Series, Bryn Chapman Parish for Best Actor, Chloe Hayden for Best Actor, and Elvis for Best Film.
The 2024 AACTA Awards forms part of AACTA Festival, a celebration of Australia’s screen industry. With more than 90 events, there’s an array of panels, meet-and-greet, screenings and activities featuring a host of AACTA nominees and winners over the four days.
AACTA Awards, Saturday February 10 7pm, Ten.
A special director’s cut including all awards from the ceremony will be available Sunday, February 11, 7.30pm on BINGE, Foxtel On-Demand and AACTA TV.
