Former TV newsreader Kelly Nestor filling in on ABC Adelaide radio’s afternoons shift

A popular former TV newsreader is making a media comeback after more than 15 years away from the microphone.

Former TV newsreader Kelly Nestor is making a surprise return to the media for the first time in almost 15 years.

Nestor, 55, is filling in on ABC Adelaide’s afternoons radio shift over the next two weeks.

The former Channel 10 and Channel 9 TV news anchor said she feels “right at home” at the ABC.

“It’s my first time back behind any microphone since 2010. I’ve been angling to get back somehow for years and I hope radio will be my thing. Fingers crossed,” said Nestor, who once presented ABC’s daily bulletin and also read the station’s 891 radio news.

“I really enjoy it. No makeup or hair requirements and freedom to say what you think.

“I’m not saying it won’t be bumpy at times. It’s three hours of talk radio, which is hard yakka. I’m learning lots and helped by really experienced producers.”

Nestor, who left Channel 9 at the end of 2009, has most recently helped provide training and workshops to government departments through her own training consultancy.

An ABC radio spokeswoman said the station’s summer line-ups feature broadcasters well-known to SA audiences, including Spence Denny, who will host breakfast and Leigh Radford, who will take over Drive until Christmas.

“We’ve shown our commitment to our audiences by ensuring there are familiar local voices on air during the festive season while some of our key presenters prepare themselves for a massive 2024,” she said.

“We’re confident listeners will appreciate an experienced, familiar voice on the radio during the summer – especially during emergencies such as bushfires.”

Much-loved presenter Denny will also return in 2024 as host of ABC Adelaide Sunday mornings program.
