Ferrera and Longoria wrote their own Golden Globes jokes because the lines they were given stank

EVA Longoria and America Ferrera caught everyone off guard with their joke at the Golden Globes. But they wrote it because the script they were given stank.

WHEN Eva Longoria and America Ferrera hit the stage at the Golden Globes this week, they caught everyone off guard with a genuinely edgy and funny bit about casual racism.

And apparently the joke came to be because both actresses thought the original scripts they were given by producers stank.

“Hi, I’m Eva Longoria and not Eva Mendes,” Longoria introduced herself to the audience during the ceremony.

“And hi, I’m America Ferrera and not Gina Rodriguez,” America added.

“And neither one of us is Rosario Dawson,” Longoria said.

The dig was in reference to a mistake made by the Golden Globes Twitter account in December when the nominations were announced. The account accidentally confused Ferrara for Gina Rodriguez, the star of Jane the Virgin.

After awarding Jon Hamm the gong, they kept the joke rolling.

“Thank you, Salma,” Longoria said to Ferrera. “You’re welcome, Charo,” responded Ferrera.

Later this week, both actresses were at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour where they discussed how the bit came about.

“When we found out we were presenting together at the Golden Globes — they always send you copy that is horrible with bad jokes — so [America and I] took it back to both of our writing staffs and came up with some stuff,” Longoria told reporters, adding they didn’t come up with the final joke until the morning of the ceremony.

“It wasn’t until the day of that she [Ferrera] sent me copy that they had written and … I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s so funny.”

Ferrera told reporters that Justin Spitzer, the creator and executive producer of her sitcom Superstore, came up with the idea.

“I went to Justin and said, ‘What is going to be funny here?’ And we went back and forth a bit, and then Justin came up with the idea to play on what happened to me,” she said, referring to the mix-up with Gina Rodriguez.

Despite coming up with the concept, Spitzer told reporters it was Ferrera who wrote the lines.
