Tegan Martin has urged young women to unfollow accounts they feel are bad for their mental health.

And the former Miss Universe Australia turned television presenter said she has considered deleting social media altogether.

“There are days where if it wasn’t part of my job, I would just delete it,” the 26-year-old told The Daily Telegraph, launching the new Bras N Things swimwear collection.

“If you can delete your account, why not? I don’t think we need it to stay in touch with our friends.”

Instagram recently removed the ability to see how many likes people receive for individual images shared on the app, stating the move was to combat the negative impact on users mental health from comparing themselves to others.

“If you are a teenage girl that is struggling mentally, in regards to what you can do, unfollow accounts that don’t make you feel good,” Martin added.

“There was a stage for me where I unfollowed all of the accounts that were just bikini accounts because it didn’t make me feel good when I woke up and scrolled through that in the morning.

“I started following more cooking accounts and healthy eating and people that are more aligned with what I am interested in.”

Martin has famously in the past spoken of her body image issues, revealing in 2017 that she was told she was “too fat to be a model”.

Those days are behind her with Martin determined to speak up for women by being vocal on such issues.

“Bras n Things is all about embracing curves and stretch marks and natural beauty so I didn’t really feel pressure at all like I have with other campaigns in the past,” she said of the campaign.

“These days I have a pretty tough skin and I’ve kind of let go of caring what anyone thinks. I only put my face to brands now that embrace diversity because otherwise I wouldn’t be in a good head space.”
