Studio 2000: ‘We thought our photo shoot was so glamorous’

Rima Milen, and her husband Rowan Pope are married with two kids but before their romance fully blossomed there was another very special union — a couple’s photo shoot at Studio 2000.

Rima Milen admits her husband, Rowan Pope, needed some convincing to take part in a Studio 2000 photography session almost two decades ago.

The couple, who are now married with two children, had been dating for about a year in 2001 when the 16-year-old high school student twisted the arm of her then-boyfriend for a “glamorous” photo shoot.

“I had to drag him along. I was really excited, so many people at school had got photos done,” said Ms Milen, 33, of Old Noarlunga.

“It was so fashionable at the time, getting the full makeover. It was like a rite of passage.”

Looking back on the photo shoot, Ms Milen conceded some of the shots now appear “a little cheesy”.

“I haven’t looked at the photos for years. The lighting and the poses... some of it is a bit weird,” she laughed.

Studio 2000, which operated for more than 30 years before going bust 2013, has enjoyed a revival in the past week after Adelaide photographer Craig James revealed he has kept all the company’s negatives.

Mr James was contracted by liquidators to complete the studio’s remaining orders, many of which were on long-term payment plans.

Before he destroys them, Mr James is offering South Australians an opportunity to buy their negatives and reclaim their old memories.

He said the response to an article in last weekend’s Sunday Mail and on advertiser.com.au had been “overwhelming”.

“It’s safe to say we have had probably over 300 inquiries at this stage,” he said.

“I would say that most of the interest we are having is from wedding shoots, and also loved ones who may have passed. More than anything it has shown the importance of photography and how much we value these memories.”

Ms Milen said she was planning to buy her negatives for old times’ sake.

“I think we’ll enlarge a few of the photos and frame them, it’ll be nice to have them on the wall,” she said.

Mr James was not given a client database so people wishing to buy negatives need to supply their reference number found on the back of photos or on order forms.
