HerStory Episode 5: Adrienne Clarke

South Australian alpaca farmer Chris Williams and his Amazing Race Australia teammate Adrienne Clarke suffered a painful exit from Ten’s reality show - in more ways than one.

On the way to last night’s pit stop in the Mongolian desert, Williams fell from a camel and was unable to finish the leg, eliminating the couple from the competition.

“Fancy our exit being caused by a camel,” said Williams, with alpacas and camels ironically from the same biological family.

“My fall from grace - I don’t know if the camel’s name was Grace? - cost us the race. I don’t think I will give a camel the time of day again, let alone ride it.”

SA’s first female metropolitan firefighter, Clarke handled the race conditions with ease but Williams admitted he didn’t expect the show to be so physically demanding.

“I am always looking for something different and challenging to do in my life and thought this would be a crazy thing to do,” said Williams, who runs the nation’s third largest alpaca herd, Ambersun Alpacas.

“I did a little bit of fitness work but had no level of appreciation as to how brutal the race was going to be, basically running from the time you start until the time you finish together with the heat and other stresses placed upon you.”

Clarke added: “It’s so sad to end like this. We did hope we could stay in the race longer because we were enjoying it so much but it wasn’t to be”.

Clarke, who joined Adelaide’s Metropolitan Fire Service in 1987, said she wanted to be a role model for young women who watch the show.

“Many females do not even consider firefighting as a career for them. I would love to think I could help to change that perception, encouraging others to challenge their potential,” she said.

“Amazing Race challenges present the opportunity, showing some of the amazing skills you can acquire as a firefighter.”

The early elimination hasn’t deterred the couple from travelling, with Williams currently in Peru on alpaca-related business while Clarke is holidaying in Nepal.

There are seven teams remaining in the Amazing Race, competing for a $250,000 cash prize.
